Eldon Richard McCuen, the son of Lee C. and Winifred V. Northup McCuen, was born February 6, 1943, in Carroll, Iowa, and died August 16, 2010, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 67 years, 6 months, and 10 days.
Eldon was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon and in 1966 was baptized, confirmed and became a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon. He attended grade school and junior high at the Gray Consolidated Schools in Gray, Iowa, and graduated from Audubon High School with the Class of 1960. Eldon helped operate the family farm and later farmed his Uncle Glen McCuens farm. He joined the National Guard in 1963 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1969.
On August 20, 1966, he was united in marriage to Joann Bruck at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. Eldon and Joann lived on and operated the family farm in Cameron Township, where they grew row crops and raised Black Angus and later Red Angus cattle. During the winters from 1980 to 1988, Eldon drove his truck for Garst Seed Company, delivering seed corn to dealers in a four- state area. Eldon also enjoyed helping his son, Pat, farm in Sharon Township. Eldon continued to farm until he was forced to retire in December 2008 due to health issues. He moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon on July 23, 2010.
Eldon was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon and a member of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed hunting when he was younger and later raised German Shepherds and buffalo. Most of all, Eldon enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his step granddaughter: Bricy McCuen; his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Andy and Margaret Bruck; his step mother-in-law: Mildred Bruck; and an infant brother-in-law: Andrew John Bruck.
Survivors include his wife, Joann McCuen, of Audubon, Iowa; his children: Annette and husband Kevin Hacker of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; Patrick and wife Jerri McCuen and Kathy and husband Kent Inman, all of Audubon; Brian and wife Erin McCuen of Lincoln, Nebraska; his grandchildren: Logan and Lane Hacker of Pleasant Hill; Trace McCuen and Kayla and Garrett Inman, all of Audubon; his step grandchildren: Rachael and husband Mark Miller of Grimes, Iowa; Jeremy and wife Kristina Lupardus of Manning, Iowa; Jenna Lupardus and fianc Shannon Cline of Perry, Iowa; Nathan Inman of Ankeny, Iowa; Joey Inman and fiance Annie Greve of Exira, Iowa; four step great grandchildren; his brothers-in-law: Ken and wife Linda Bruck of Harlan, Iowa; John and Janie Bruck of Earling, Iowa; Tom and Rose Bruck of Avoca, Iowa; Kevin Bruck of Earling, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon.
Visitation:
The family will meet friends Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at 6 p.m. with a scripture service at 7 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa.
Service:
The Mass of the Christian Burial will be Thursday, August 19, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon.
