Elizabeth Slayton

Elizabeth "Betty" Slayton, 83, of Casey, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Iowa.

Elizabeth Ann Caltrider was born April 27, 1928, to Charles and Irene (Knauer) Caltrider in Guthrie County, Iowa. Betty lived in Casey and attended schools in Guthrie County. After high school she attended Teacher Training College and taught for a brief period before starting her own family.

On November 25, 1948, she married Donald Lee Slayton in Guthrie County. They moved to Waterloo for three years and then retuned to Casey in the early 1950s to farm. Betty then changed her career from teaching to being a farmwife.

She was a lifelong member of the Casey United Methodist Church being active in women's circles. She was also involved in several federated and neighborhood clubs.

Betty loved gardening, agriculture and livestock. She enjoyed her life as an active farmwife. She treasured the times she and Don traveled and spent winters in Texas. She was an avid reader and spent time in the Casey Library. Betty had faith in God and her church. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and other family.


Preceding Betty in death were her parents, Charles and Irene Caltrider and her brother, Raymond Caltrider.

Those surviving are her husband, Donald Slayton of Casey, IA; her children, Carolyn (Tom) Clemens of Olathe, KS, David (Joyce) Slayton of Urbandale, IA and Robert (Janice) Slayton of Casey, IA; her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Chris) Pedigo and their children, Katelyn and Nicholas, all of Olathe, KS, Tiffany (Aric) Rush and their children, Jonah and Max, all of Ankeny, IA, Tresa Slayton of Ankeny, IA, Christine (fiancé Mike Dewall) Slayton of Des Moines, IA, Charles Slayton of Adair, IA and Scott Simpson of Des Moines, IA; her brother, Keith (Karla) Caltrider of Casey, IA; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation with family will be from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at the Casey United Methodist Church in Casey, IA.

The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the Casey United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Dalmanutha Cemetery.

Family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may go to the Casey United Methodist Church, the Casey Library or Iowa Hospice.
