Emmert Alfred Juhl, the son of Alfred Zink and Mary Sadie Nielsen Juhl, was born May 23, 1930, at his parents home in Sharon Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died December 5, 2010, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 80 years, 6 months, and 12 days.
Emmert was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. He attended rural school near Audubon and later near Guthrie Center, Iowa. During his freshman year in high school he attended the Guthrie Center High School then transferred and graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1948. Emmert then was employed as a mechanic at the Young Implement Company in Elk Horn, Iowa. On January 7, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his tour of duty he served in automotive maintenance stateside and also in Korea. He was honorably discharged on December 19, 1955 and returned to the Audubon area.
On January 29, 1956, he was united in marriage toShirley Edinger, at the Methodist Church in Lovilia, Iowa. They operated several farms around the Audubon area and had four children. Each child was born on a different farm which they rented. In 1964 they purchased a farm northeast of Brayton, Iowa. They raised livestock and grew grain for over 29 years before retiring. They sold the farm, but continued to live there until they moved into Exira in July of 1991. During their retirement they spent several years as mission builders helping to build churches in Indiana and Pennsylvania. They also enjoyed spending their winters in southern Texas. Emmert lived at home until he moved to the Exira Care Center in March of 2009.
Emmert was a member of the Exira Lutheran Church. He had served on the Church Council and had ushered for many years. He was a member of the Aid Association of Lutherans and had served as president of the Exira branch. He served a term on the Exira School Board. He was a member of the American Legion Post #350, Brayton, Iowa and had served as the Commander for several years. He was active in the Brayton Community and often had played Santa Claus for the Community Christmas Parties.
Preceding Emmert in death were his parents; his sister Lois and husband Richard Bishop, Sr. and his brother-in-law James Harris.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Juhl of Exira, Iowa; his children Sharon Juhl of Fayetteville, Tennessee, Karen and husband Allan Ruch of Dayton, Ohio, Robert Juhl of Newell, Iowa, William and wife Marie Juhl of Lexington, South Carolina; his grandchildren Jonathon Juhl of Fayetteville, Megan Pickett of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Allyson Ruch, Gregory Ruch,and Kelly Ruchall of Dayton, Janet Juhl of Missouri, Stephanie Juhl of Enid, Oklahoma, Sandra Juhl of Des Moines, Iowa, Zachary Juhl and Jared Juhl both of Lexington; his great grandchildren Anna Marie Juhl and Milo Juhl both of Enid; his sister-in-law Lois Harris of North Port, Florida; nieces nephews other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Wednesday evening, December 8, 2010, at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Thursday, December 9, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira, Iowa.
