Evan Loren King, 100, long-time resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Atlantic Nursing & Rehab in Atlantic.

Loren was born August 20, 1912, to Harry and Della (Moore) King in Nodaway, Iowa. He moved to Atlantic in 1926 and graduated high school in 1932. Loren and Mildred Minor eloped to Audubon and were married on December 20, 1933, without telling anyone. The couple lived in Atlantic where they raised three children.

Over the years, Loren held many jobs and retired as owner of King Sporting Goods. He had three brothers that were very active in many sports even at the national level. Loren was not able to participate in any physical sports due to a hip injury. Despite the injury he was able to be active in golf, bowling and pool leagues for many years. Those who knew Loren, knew he had a wonderful sense of humor, a caring heart and an even keel personality. He was a wise and humble man who loved his family.

Loren is survived by his son, Ron King of Atlantic; Janet King of Atlantic; sons-in-law, Terry Ray of Spirit Lake, IA and Larry Ray of Spencer, IA; grandchildren, Michael King and Susan of Phoenix, AZ, Rhonda Walker and Bill of Exira, IA, Karen Book of Adel, IA, Brett Ray and Shan of Urbandale, IA, Dan Ray and Laurie of Milford, IA, Robin Ray of Eden Prairie, MN, Joy Grandgeorge and Keith of Clarion, IA, Holly Anderson and Randy of Grand Island, NE, Matthew Ray and Melinda of Greenwood Village, CO, Christian Ray of Denver, CO, Shari Ray and Stormy Griffith of Oklahoma City, OK and Lori Ray of Lincoln, NE; 20 great-grandchildren, Corey King and Poev Vann, Clint Walker, Alec Walker, Rachel Walker, Jessica and Paul Rohrer, Dylan Book, Aryn Book, Kaitlyn Ray, Kolton Ray, Reagan Ray, Griffin Ray, Jordan Grandgeorge, Chelsea Grandgeorge, Jarred Anderson, Meagan Anderson, Riley Anderson, Evan Ray, Briana Closser, Brandon Closser, Angelique Ray-Scott; 4 great-great-grandchildren, Onna Vann, Emily King, Brigett King and Tommy Rohrer; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, in May of 2007; his parents, Harry and Della King; his brothers, Lynn, Don and Deb; and two daughters, Charlotte Ray and Sharon Ray.

A gathering of family and friends will take place on Thursday, March 14, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The family will then gather in the Hockenberry Family Care community room for lunch at 12:00 p.m.

Interment of the cremains will take place in the Atlantic Cemetery at a later date.
