Frances Mae Hansen, the daughter of Nels and Clara Whitted Johnson, was born May 6, 1917 at her parents’ home in Exira, Iowa and died January 15, 2012 at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 8 months, and 9 days. Frances was baptized and confirmed at the Exira Christian Church in Exira, Iowa. She attended Exira Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1935. Frances then was employed as a telephone operator for many years. On October 7, 1945, she was united in marriage to Earl F. Hansen at her parents home in Exira, Iowa. One daughter was born to this union. They moved to a farm southeast of Brayton, Iowa and then purchased a farm one mile east of Oakfield, Iowa. She helped Earl on the farm and always had a large garden and raised chickens. In 1965, she was employed at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa as a Certified Nurses Aide until the Exira Care Center was opened in 1975. She was then employed there as a Certified Nurses Aide and a Med-Aide for many years until she retired in 1992. Earl died February 1, 1980. She lived on the farm for two years and then made her home in Exira. Frances was a member of the Exira Christian Church in Exira. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Brayton, Iowa and was a member of the garden club. She was also in several bridge clubs and pitch clubs. Frances enjoyed quilting, canning, playing cards, and making flower arrangements. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed traveling with her daughter Dorothy. Preceding her in death was her husband Earl F. Hansen and her parents. Survivors include her daughter Dorothy and husband Melvin Gross of Muscatine, Iowa; her grandsons: Christopher Gross and special friend Angela and his daughters McKenzie Gross and Katilyn Gross and her daughter Piper all of St. Cloud, Minnesota; Ahren and wife Christina Gross and their sons Benjamin Gross and Henri Gross all of Muscatine, Iowa; her sister-in-law Alverta Hansen of Midwest City, Oklahoma; her first cousin Barbara Waldron of Regina, SK, Canada; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira, Iowa.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.
Service:
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 10:30 A.M. at the Exira Christian Church in Exira, Iowa.
