Francis Mailander, 97, a lifelong Cass County, Iowa resident, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.
Francis Pete Mailander, was born March 21, 1909, on the family farm north of Wiota, Iowa, the son of Frank and Christina (Herchenbach) Mailander.
He graduated from the Wiota High School and on August 31, 1927, Francis married Eunice Pedersen. She passed away in 2002, after 74 years and 6 months of marriage to Francis.
He farmed for 24 years and later worked for the former Thomason Construction Company in Atlantic, Iowa, for 20 years.
Francis was a member of the Atlantic First United Methodist Church and the Nishna Hills Golf Club, also in Atlantic.
He enjoyed playing golf and was an accomplished pool player. Francis also loved to play cards at Nishna Hills and especially liked to play pinochle, pitch and gin. Above all, Francis loved his time as a farmer.
Francis is survived by his daughter, Dolores and her husband, Robert Conger of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Dean and his wife, Sue Brownlee of Atlantic, Iowa, Diane and her husband Bill Poch of Riverside, Iowa, Donna and her husband, Pat Luers of Salt Lake City, Utah, Rita and Noel Edward of Park, Colorado, Mike and Linda Conger of Salt Lake City, Utah, Linda and Bill Wallish of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Joe and Kelli Conger of Polk City, Iowa. He also leaves behind 20 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Christina Mailander; his wife, Eunice; a daughter and son-in-law, Nadine and Marvin Brownlee; three sisters, Cecile Reed, Hilda Jorgensen, and Cloretta Reeves; three brothers, Milford, Melvin, and Clifford Mailander.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic with the Reverend Gary DeGeest officiating.
Visitation for the public will begin at 12 Noon Friday, with the family present to greet their friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.
Committal services and interment will take place in the Atlantic Cemetery, followed by a fellowship and luncheon in the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church.
