Francis Joseph Vais, 76, of Exira, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2014, in Dallas, Texas.
Francis Joseph Vais was born February 16, 1938, to Joseph Francis and Anna Mary (Ruzek) Vais in rural Audubon County, Iowa. He grew up in Audubon Township, attended country school from kindergarten through 8th grade, and graduated from the Anita High School in 1957. He lived his entire life in the same square mile in Audubon Township, Audubon County.
On October 11, 1958, he married Jean McElroy at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Creston, Iowa. He owned and operated Vais Pump Service in Cass County and the surrounding area for 56 years.
Riding bicycles was a favorite activity of his and he belonged to the Anita Bicycle Club. He was an avid camper and traveled to Texas every winter. Francis was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita.
Surviving Francis are his wife, Jean of Exira, IA; his children, Larry (Marcia) Vais of Anita, IA, Karen Huse of Federal Way, WA, Gary (Julie) Vais of Exira, IA, Sharon Wagner of Anita, IA, Sherry (Gary) Pitcock of Dallas, TX and Terry (Noriko) Vais of Newnan, GA; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Raymond (Betty) Vais of Exira, IA, Roger (Barb) Vais and Bernard (Becky) Vais all of Anita, IA.
Francis was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna Vais.
A Rosary service will be held at 5:00 p.m., with family visitation following until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 4, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita, Iowa.
Interment will be in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa.
