John Frederick Scarlett Jr., 95, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Friday, December 10, 2010, at his home in Adair, Iowa.
Fred was born February 21, 1915, in Bosworth, Missouri, to John Frederick Scarlett Sr. and Ella M. Scholl. He attended elementary schools in Bosworth until the family moved to Anita, Iowa, in 1923. He then attended Anita Community Schools until the eighth grade. Fred was united in marriage to Iva Mae Heckman on June 30, 1937. They lived in Anita until 1942 at which time they moved to Adair, Iowa.
He served in the United States Army during World War II serving in Italy with the 10th Mountain Division.
Fred was self-employed his entire life. He was a truck driver, owned a second hand store and was a building mover. He was a member of the Anita American Legion Post #210, and past member of the Iowa House Movers Association and the Early Wheels of Iowa. He was a longtime member of the Adair United Methodist Church. Fred also served on the Adair City Council.
Surviving Fred are his children, Cora (Mike) Kelly of Almo, TX, Terry (Russ) Anderson of Anita, IA, Marge (Howard) Zanders of Atwater, CA, John (Connie) Scarlett of Anita, IA, and Steve of Adair, IA; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Fred in death were his mother, father, and two-step mothers; his wife, Iva Mae; two brothers, Lafe and George; one sister, Helen Redburn; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Adair, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 14th at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair. Burial of cremated remains will be in the Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair.
In lieu of flowers, it was Fred's request that donations to be made to the Salvation Army.
