Gary Glenn Fancher, the son of Ora Glenn and Mildred Lavaun (Somers) Fancher, was born October 4, 1952, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. Gary went to be with the Lord on April 16, 2015, as a result of a grain bin accident on his farm northeast of Audubon, Iowa at the age of 62 years, 6 months, and 12 days.
Gary was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa. He attended the Gray Elementary School then transferred into the Audubon Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1970. He continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Business in 1974. Gary returned to Audubon and continued farming with his father.
On June 9, 1974, he was united in marriage to Joan Schmidt at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Two children Brooke and Justin were born to this union. Gary continued to operate the farm growing grain and raising livestock. He also assisted his son delivering the Des Moines Register newspapers in the Audubon area, eventually taking over the business. He then retired after his grandchildren were born. Gary was always willing and able to drop everything to help his family, friends, or neighbors whenever they needed assistance.
Gary was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa. He served as an Elder, an Usher, and was a videographer. Gary was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan and loved attending all the football and basketball games. He was always looking for a good deal which caused him to become an E-bay connoisseur. Gary enjoyed his grandchildren and was willing to drop everything to babysit them. Next to Joni his greatest joy was his children and grandchildren.
Gary was preceded in death by his father Glenn Fancher; his mother-in-law Lois Schmidt; and his nephew Michael Schmidt.
Survivors include his wife Joni Fancher of Audubon, Iowa; his children Brooke and husband Jerod Burns of Kellogg, Iowa and Justin and wife Katy Fancher of Grimes, Iowa; his grandsons Beau and Ethan Burns both of Kellogg, Iowa and Brock, Brody, and Brecken Fancher all of Grimes, Iowa; his mother Lavaun Fancher of Audubon, Iowa; his sisters Marilyn and husband Danny Rubel of Stanton, Iowa and Donna and husband David Borst of St. Petersburg, Florida; his father-in-law Duane Schmidt of Audubon, Iowa; his brothers-in-law Dan and wife Chris Schmidt of Audubon, Iowa, Terry Schmidt of Atlantic, Iowa, and Dean and wife Julie Schmidt of Audubon, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Honorary casket bearers will be his grandsons Beau Burns, Brock Fancher, Brody Fancher, Ethan Burns, and Brecken Fancher. The casket bearers will be Justin Fancher, Jerod Burns, David Borst Danny Rubel, Dan Schmidt, Terry Schmidt, Dean Schmidt, Michael Bauer, Lou Herbers, Ed Andersen, Dave Jensen, Paul Madsen, Dave Madsen, and Chris Christensen.
