Gary Hulsebus

December 28, 1944 — August 19, 2008

Gary Hulsebus, 63, of Lewis, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at his home.

Gary Lee Hulsebus was born December 28, 1944, at home on the farm southeast of Lewis, Iowa, the son of Merlin Fay and Theone Maxine (McCullough) Hulsebus.

He grew up on the farm and went to school in Griswold where he played basketball and sang in the chorus. He graduated from Griswold High School in 1963. Following high school Gary served in the Iowa Army National Guard and served in the 168th Infantry from 1964 to 1970.

On November 6, 1966, he married JoAnn Mae Harter Young at the Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis, Iowa, where he was a lifelong member.

Gary had worked for Steffen's Electric and Brown Electric before he and Dave Mudd co-owned and operated Sure Electric. In 1981, he went to work for what is currently Mahle Engine Components and continued working there until the present. Gary worked hard his entire life and always made sure he could provide for his family.

Gary was an avid "professional" fisherman and an Atlantic Trojan fan. In his earlier years, he enjoyed racing his stockcar in Corning and Harlan, Iowa. Later on, he became quite proficient as a cook and would use that skill often.

His family will remember him for the love and dedication he gave them. He was his grandchildren's #1 Fan! Gary would constantly help others, even if it meant getting behind schedule himself. He was a man of few words and always spoke through his heart. To know him was to love him; he never made an enemy. He truly loved his family.

Gary is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his son, Tommy Young and his friend, Jenny Hacker, of Audubon, Iowa, and their children, Kanion and Lake of Audubon, Iowa, Cody of Des Moines, Iowa, and Tyler, Jamie and Brandon of Mesa, Arizona; his son, Monty Young and his wife, Annette, and their children, Cole, Brock and Taylor of Atlantic, Iowa, his son, Shon Young of Lewis, Iowa, and his children, Travis of Atlantic, Iowa, and Sydnee of Exira, Iowa; his daughter, Tracey Pickett and her husband, Trent of Wichita, Kansas, and their children, Austin and Zane; his sister, Karen McConnelee of Atlantic, Iowa; and brothers, Dennis "Bum" Hulsebus and his friend, Judy of Hockley, Texas, and Rick Hulsebus and his wife, Sue of Griswold, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Landon and her husband, Bob of Exira, Iowa, and Phyllis Jensen and her husband, Tim of Hamlin, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Larry Harter and his wife, Alice of Des Moines, Iowa, Rick Harter and his girlfriend, Coreen of Exira, Iowa, and Jugger Harter of Atlantic, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fay and Theone Hulsebus and his parents-in-law, Dale and Velma Harter.
