Gene Young

Gene Young, the son of Roy and Ellen Jones Young was born March 18, 1936, at his parents’ home in Oakfield, Iowa and died April 12, 2014 at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 78 years and 24 days. Gene attended the Oakfield Academy in Oakfield, Iowa. After school he was employed at the concrete factory in Brayton, Iowa. On February 28, 1956, he was inducted into the United States Army. During his tour of duty he served as a cook helper and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged on February 18, 1958, and returned home to the Brayton area. Gene then worked at Henningsen Construction in Atlantic, Iowa. In 1958, he was united in marriage to JoAnn Mae Harter at the Exira Christian Church in Exira, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. In 1982, he was employed with Audubon County in the Secondary Roads Department until 1998. He became an independent contractor painting building and homes until he retired due to his failing health. He moved to the Friendship Village in Audubon, Iowa in 1998. In 2005 he resided with his sister, Edna Crawley, until February 14, 2014, when he moved to the Exira Care Center in Exira. Gene was an avid reader and outdoorsman and he loved his animals. He enjoyed to go for rides in the car and loved to play pull tabs (pickle) tickets. He also enjoyed watching westerns, sports, and car racing on the television. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. Gene is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sister: Roy Young; Martha and husband Joe Burns; Robert Young; Charlie Young; Frances and wife Alice Young; Glen Young; Lloyd Young; Andy Young; his brother-in-law Harley Crawley; and his special great nephew George “Little Bear” Crawley. Survivors include his sons: Tom Young and special friend Jenny Hacker of Audubon, Iowa; Monty and wife Annette Young of Atlantic, Iowa; Shon and wife Mary Young of Lewis, Iowa; his grandchildren: Kanion Hacker and Lake Hacker both of Audubon; Cody Gordon of Des Moines, Iowa; Tyler Burton, Jaime Burton, and Brandon Burton all of Mesa, Arizona; Cole Young, Brock Young, Taylor Young, and Travis Young all of Atlantic; Sydnee Young of Exira, Iowa; his step grandchildren: Brandy Harp of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Lynette Nicholson of Atlantic; 1 great grandson; his sister Edna Crawley of Exira; his sister-in-law Jeanette Young of Bondurant, Iowa; his special cat Lucy; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Inurnment will be in the Oakfield Cemetery east of Brayton, Iowa at a later date.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Service:
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
