Gilbert was born to Fred and Lillie Mueller on October 19th, 1916 outside of Griswold, Iowa, during a snowstorm. His father passed away three months later, but he was raised by a loving Christian mother and his doting sisters.
Gilbert graduated from Griswold High School in 1934 and went on to work at the creamery in Griswold and for Tyler Brothers in Villisca.
In 1945 Gilbert started working at the Atlantic Mill and Elevator as an accountant. That year, he married Millie White of Villisca. Their only child, Jo Ann, was born in 1952.
In 1981 Gilbert and Millie started Mueller Reflexology. Through the years they helped hundreds of people with reflexology. Gilbert worked on his last patient two days before his death.
Gilbert's life was wrapped up in the church. He was a member of Central Church of Christ in Griswold. He sang in the choir, co-taught a Sunday School class with Millie, and served as a deacon and an elder. In 2001 Gilbert and Millie began attending First Church of Christ in Atlantic.
Gilbert loved music, golf, the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He hated onions, garlic and being late - all three on an equal basis.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his father, mother, three brothers and seven sisters. He is survived by Millie, his wife of 66 years, his daughter Jo Ann Krueger (husband Hank), his grandchildren, Jeremy Burkum (wife Barb) and Rachel Burkum, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned Tuesday, August 30th at 10:50 a.m. at First Church of Christ, 1310 SW 7th in Atlantic, with a luncheon to follow afterwards. Interment will take place at a future date.
