Glen Howard Gustafson was born August 30, 1922, on a farm near Marne, Iowa, the son of Leonard Joseph and Agnes Othelia (Nord) Gustafson and passed away Friday, November 9, 2012, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
He graduated from Adair High School with the class of 1940. Glen attended airplane mechanics tech school in Des Moines, and after graduation, started working for United Airlines in Cheyenne, Wyoming. While there, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942. He spent 3 ½ years overseas serving his country in areas including New Caledonia, Guam, Saipan, Okinawa and China. Glen was honorably discharged in 1946.
Glen returned to Iowa for a visit with his family and met the love of his life, Darlene Tibben. They were married June 18, 1947, in Hiawatha, Kansas. The couple farmed and raised their family on a farm northeast of Adair, moving to town in 1986. He worked for Agriland Farm Service for several years.
Glen loved farming and horses for both work and pleasure. He enjoyed visiting with people sharing stories of his life, which younger people seemed to enjoy. Glen was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; his parents, Leonard and Agnes Gustafson; his daughters, Kerry Sue and Cheryl; his brothers, Alfred and Clarence; his brothers-in-law, Lonnie Tibben and Marvin (Noreen and Pat) Tibben; and his special cousin, Norma Wedemeyer.
Glen is survived by his son, Delmar (Sue Plagman) Gustafson of Atlantic; his daughters, Cindy (Brad) Reinhardt of Davenport and Nancy Slayton of Phoenix, Arizona; his son-in-law, Randy Dunn of Oak Ridge, Missouri; six grandchildren, who thought he was the greatest man on earth; eleven precious, great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Leon (Deanne) Tibben of Andover, Minnesota; his sisters-in-law, Doris Gustafson of Adair and Margaret Gustafson of Atlantic; his special cousins, Helen Thomas and Sylvia Nord both of Libertyville, Illinois; many loving nieces and nephews; his special friends, Mark and Linda Madison, Bernard Mertis, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2012, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 12, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Adair.
Burial with military honors will be in the Sunnyhill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Adair or to the Huntington's Society.
