Glen Paul Wedemeyer, 84, of Adair, Iowa, passed away from complications due to liver cancer, on Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at Caring Acres Nursing and Rehab Center in Anita, Iowa.
He was born June 10, 1931, in Audubon County, Iowa, the son of Albert and Eliza (Paul) Wedemeyer. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church on July 5, 1931, and confirmed on March 25, 1945. He attended country school and graduated from Adair High School with the class of 1950. He then farmed in Audubon County until July of 1952.
On July 20, 1952, Glen was united in marriage to Dorothy Kirchhoff at Fletcher Chapel Methodist Church. In August 1952, he was called to the United States Army. After Army boot camp he was sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he was trained on a 280 Cannon Gun, which was designed to shoot an atomic bomb. Glen became the instructor for the units that hauled the cannon gun. Dorothy joined Glen in Fort Sill and they made their home in Lawton, Oklahoma, until the fall of 1954 when they moved back to Audubon County, Iowa, and Glen went back into farming. He was then in the farm implement business from 1972 until he retired in 1983. During his retirement, Glen and Dorothy enjoyed their winters in Texas and Arizona. They moved into town in Adair in 2004.
Glen is survived by his children, Kevin Wedemeyer and significant other, Mary Auten of Anita, IA, Dwight Wedemeyer and his wife Angie of Fort Dodge, IA and Linda Eilts and her husband Tom of Wiota, IA; his six grandchildren, Paul and Lucas Wedemeyer, Eric and Sara Wedemeyer, Jason Eilts and Jessica Barber and her husband T.J.; his great-grandchildren, Karley and Briauna Eilts and Lillian, Drew and A.J. Barber; his sister-in-law, Connie Kirchhoff; and his brother-in-law, Bernard Grubbs; and other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents, Albert and Eliza Wedemeyer; his brother; and his grandson, Benjamin Wedemeyer.
Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2015, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair, IA.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 25, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair. Interment will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Adair, IA.
