Glenn A. Slayton, 87, of Mount Ayr, Iowa, and formerly of Guthrie County, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2008, at Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr.
Glenn Arnold Slayton was born November 24, 1921, in Audubon County, Iowa, the son of Lona and Emma Beatrice (Crees) Slayton. He attended country school near Hamlin, Iowa, and after the 8th grade, moved with his family to Guthrie County, Iowa.
He started working when he was 12 years old helping on his parents farm. Before he spent the majority of his life farming, he also worked at the landfill, hauled for a creamery, hauled livestock in Iowa and the surrounding states, and shelled corn.
Glenn loved horses and everything about them. He belonged to a horse riding club and a thoroughbred racing association.
His enjoyments included hunting, time on the farm, riding his 3-wheeler, spending time with his kids and grandkids and horse races (his favorite horse of all time was Secretariat). His really fun times were spent with his buddies tipping a few beers or having a nip of Tennessee moonshine every now and then. Glenn loved to meet new people and had a heart big enough to help anyone at anytime. Favorite sayings of Glenn's were; "Oh Goody, when it was time to work on the farm, "Shoot to Kill" whenever he went hunting, and he referred to his grandsons as "Cowboys".
Surviving Glenn is his son, John Slayton of Stuart, IA, his daughters, Connie Norgart and her husband Glenn of Fontanelle, IA, Christy Nook of New Market, IA, and Kelly Irlmeier of Stuart, IA; his grandchildren, Ryan (Brook) Norgart and Rachel Norgart, John Tyler (Chantal) Slayton and Jennifer Slayton, Kyle (Kayla) Nook and Christian Nook, Jaimie Campbell, Benjamin Irlmeier, Robert Irlmeier and Christopher Irlmeier; his great-granddaughter, Kylie Jo Campbell; his brothers, Dale (Fannie) Slayton of Casey, IA, Donald (Betty) Slayton of Casey, IA, and Harold (Janet) Slayton of Cala, Florida; and his sister, Betty (Milo) Sorensen of Guthrie Center, IA, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
