Harold Benjamin Hoegh

May 13, 1921 — April 14, 2008

Harold Benjamin Hoegh, the son of Benjamin C. and Emma Clausen Hoegh, was born May 13, 1921, at his parents home in Oakfield Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died April 14, 2008, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 11 months, and 1 day.
     Harold was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa and confirmed at Oak Hill Lutheran Church west of Brayton, Iowa.  He attended Oakfield No. 5 Center School west of Brayton and then graduated from Elk Horn High School with the Class of 1939.  Harold attended one winter quarter at Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa.  He then worked for Jensen Construction for a short time.
     On June 11, 1942, he was united in marriage to Olivia Jensen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, IA.  Three children, Kathleen, Bruce and Winston were born to this union.  They lived on and operated Harolds family farm west of Brayton. In August of 1944 he was inducted into the U.S. Army.  During his tour of duty he served in the European Theater.  In February of 1945 he was injured by shrapnel in action in Germany.  He was hospitalized in England then spent a long rehabilitation in the United States.  EH was honorably discharged in January of 1947.  He returned to home and continued farming.  In the late 1950s he worked for the ASCS as a fieldsman for several years, then continued to farm.  In February of 1989 Olivia died suddenly.  Harold continued to live on the farm and helped manage the farm operation.  On February 13, 1993, he married Lorraine Lykke at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon.  They enjoyed several trips to North Carolina and enjoyed attending Tee Tours sponsored by the V.A. They lived in Audubon for a short time and then in 1995 they moved to Exira, IA. In October of 2005 Harold moved to the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. 
     Harold was a charter member of the Brayton Lutheran Church and had served as president of the Brayton Lutheran Church and its predecessor, the Oak Hill Lutheran Church.  He was a member of the Oak Hill Cemetery Board.  He was a member of Brayton Legion Post No. 350.  He was a member and served as president on the Board of Directors of the Marne-Elk Horn Telephone Company and also the Danish Mutual Insurance Association as a member and president.  He was a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.  He had been a member and president of the Exira School Board. Harold was a great fundraiser for the Brayton Community Club and the Legion Feather Party. He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Home Board. He was an active member of Amvets, V.F.W., Disabled American Veterans and most active in the Brayton American Legion Post No. 350. The Iowa Department of Agriculture awarded Harold the Century Farm Designation in 1976. His grandson Joel continues to live on the family farm.
     Preceding him in addition to his wife were his parents; his brother Wilbert C. Hoegh; his step-son Steven Lykke; his nephew Russell Hoegh; his sisters-in-law: Amanda Boelth;  Selma Larsen, Y. Virginia Nielsen; his brothers-in-law: Erling Jensen, Evald Jensen, and Bernhard Jensen.
     Survivors include his wife Lorraine Hoegh of Exira, IA; his children:  Kathleen M. Hoegh of Des Moines, IA; Bruce C. and Suzanne Hoegh  of Atlantic, IA and their children:  Justin Hoegh of Denison, IA; Joel Hoegh of Atlantic, IA; Maren and Brian Doherty of Paola, KS; Winston T. and Donna Hoegh, of Atlantic, IA and their children:  Laura and Kevin TePoel of Stanton, IA; Cynthia and Alec Paulsen of Exira, IA; Elizabeth Hoegh and friend Steven Radcliff of Red Oak, IA; his step-children:  Roberta Roddy  and her son Patrick Lykke of Audubon, IA; Ellis and Gwendolyn Craig and their children;  Lucas and Carolyn Craig; Rachel and Josh Williams, and Peter and Erin Craig, all of Quincy, IL; his step-daughter-in-law:  Rita Lykke and her children:  Hans and Melany Lykke and Joanna and Caleb Stewart, all of Oakboro, NC; 12 great-grandchildren: his sisters-in-law: Erma Larsen of Brayton, IA and Edna Eagen of MN; his brothers-in-law: Gerald Jensen of Des Moines, IA; W. Clayton Nielsen of Elk Horn, IA; Emmert and Corrine Christensen of KS; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Honorary casket bearers will be Leon Hoegh, Calvin Hoegh, Merlyn Hansen, Art Hansen, Robert Clausen, Donald Clausen, Harry L. Bebensee and Paul Bebensee. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren: Justin B. Hoegh, Joel W. Hoegh, Maren K. (Hoegh) Doherty, Laura M. (Hoegh) TePoel, Cynthia K. (Hoegh) Paulsen, Elizabeth E. Hoegh, Lucas Craig, Peter Craig, Rachel (Craig) Williams, Patrick Lykke, Hans Lykke, and Joanna (Lykke) Stewart.

Memorials:
The family prefers memorials to the Brayton Lutheran Church, Oak Hill Cemetery, Salem Lutheran Home, Alzheimers Association and the Brayton American Legion Post 350

Cemetery:
Interment will be held in the Oakhill Cemetery west of Brayton.

Visitation:
The family will meet friends Wednesday evening at 7:00 at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton, IA.
