Harold Jay Godwin, the son of Joseph Jay and Anna Knudsen Godwin, was born September 12, 1937, on his parents farm in Greeley Township, Audubon County, north of Exira, Iowa and died July 15, 2009 at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 3 days.
Harold was baptized at the Exira Christian Church. He attended rural school in Greeley Township, Hamlin No.2, and then graduated from the Exira High School with the class of 1956. On __________, he enlisted in the United States Marines. During his tour of duty he served in Southern California. He was honorably discharged on _________ and returned to Exira. He helped operate the family farm with his father.
On June 26, 1960, he was united in marriage to Beverly Jean Lundahl at the Swede Valley Lutheran Church south of Ogden, Iowa. Harold continued to farm until he retired from farming in 2002. Beverly died February 20, 2003. Harold lived on the farm then moved to the Exira Care Center in November of 2004.
Harold was an active member of the Exira Christian Church. He taught the mens Sunday School Class, served as an elder and was on the church board and served as president.
Harold was a member and served as president in several organizations including the Audubon County Farm Bureau, Pork Producers and the Exira school board. He was a charter member of the Exira Lions Club and served as the District Governor, Southwest Iowa District #9. He was a member of the Exira American Legion.
Preceding him in death in addition to wife Beverly Godwin; are his parents; his sister Sara Godwin; his infant sisters: Ruth Godwin and Darlene Godwin.
Survivors include his sons: Jeffrey and wife Teresa Godwin of Cumberland, Iowa; Steven and wife Ann Godwin of Eagle Point, Oregon; his grandchildren: Adam Godwin of Ames, Iowa; Nick Godwin, Brandon Godwin, Morgan Godwin, Kaylee Godwin all of Cumberland; Sydney Godwin of Eagle Point, Oregon; his sisters-in-law: Pat Lundahl of Omaha, Nebraska; Kay and husband Raynold Johnson of Woodward, Iowa; Sharon and husband Gary Alban of Ogden, Iowa; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Alan Finestead on Monday, July 20, 2009, at 10:30 A.M. at Exira Christian Church in Exira, IA.
