Harry Gill

Harry Clair Gill, 92, of Atlantic, Iowa, and formerly of Anita, Iowa, died April 14, 2012, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa.

He was born April 22, 1919, in Marne, Iowa, to Harry Amos and Linda Elizabeth (Kern) Gill. Clair graduated from the Anita High School. On September 18, 1946, he married Jean Wood.

Clair was employed at Chadwick Implement Company for 16 years and later employed at the Anita Municipal Utilities for 22 ½ years. He was a lifelong resident of Anita until moving to the Heritage House in Atlantic in 2008. Clair was also a lifelong member of the Anita Congregational United Church of Christ in Anita, Iowa. He was also a member of the Anita Masonic Lodge for 50 years and a member of the Anita Fire Department for 60 years.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps, World War II from 1942 to 1945 and was stationed in the South Pacific. Clair was very proud of his service and took pictures of the surrender of the Japanese as he witnessed it. He was proud to be chosen for the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2008. Clair was also proud that he earned his pilot's license and enjoyed flying when he was in his 50s.

Surviving Clair is his wife, Jean Gill of Atlantic, Iowa; daughter, Linda Schilling of Chicago, IL; sister, Patricia Tungland and her children, Nora Kinsey, Lisa Kirby, Sara Lee and Alan Kinsey; brother, Ronald (Rose) Gill and his children, Debby Christiansen, Jeffrey, Michael and Brian Gill, and sister-in-law Elizabeth Gill and her daughter Pam Allen.

Clair was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Linda Gill; brother, Merle (Ione) Gill; and sisters, Marjorie (Steve) Taggart and Alice (Waldo) Baldridge.

A remembrance service will be held at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, 2012. A time for visiting and sharing, along with a light meal, will follow at the Heritage House.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Anita Fire Department.


Interment of ashes will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.
