Harry Lytle

Harry Eugene Lytle was born September 26, 1922, at Persia, Iowa, the son of Jesse and Bettie Lytle. Raised on a farm in rural Harlan, he graduated from Harlan High School in 1940, and attended business college in Council Bluffs.

During WWII, Harry served in the U. S. Army where he was trained in hematology and radiology at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver and Lawson General Hospital in Atlanta. It was in Atlanta that he met his future wife Eloise, and they were married in Atlanta in June 1944.

After the allied invasion, Harry was stationed at various field hospitals in Normandy, France, including at Cherbourg and LaHavre. He was discharged in 1946, and returned to Harlan to farm, then moved to Omaha in June of 1947 to work in the laboratory at Doctor's Hospital. In January 1948, he moved to Atlantic to head both the laboratory and radiology departments at the Atlantic Memorial Hospital. When the Atlantic Memorial Hospital became the Cass County Memorial Hospital, Harry resigned as head of laboratory but continued as head of radiology. He retired in 1988 after serving 40 years. Harry was a member of the First Baptist Church in Atlantic, Iowa, serving as treasurer in earlier years.

Harry and his wife Eloise taught dance classes throughout southwest Iowa, including ballroom, polka, disco, Latin, and country and western dances.

In 2008, Harry moved to the Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan, where he died October 1, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Eloise in 2007; son, Marvis in 2003; and brothers, Wendell, Dean, Lee, Wayne and Randall.

Survivors include son, Noel and life partner David Mayersky of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; daughter-in-law, Kenna Kenworthy of Gainesville, Missouri; grandchildren, Darcy Lytle of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Heather Bushner and her husband Dave of Hardenville, Missouri, and their children, Maverick and Savannah; and sisters-in-law, Vivian Lytle and Virginia Lytle, of Harlan, Anne Johnson and her husband Harry of Reynolds, Georgia, Marguerite Hedrick of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Vi Jones of Vero Beach, Florida, and Helen Jones of Panama City, Florida; and brothers-in-law, Herbert Jones of Perry, Georgia, and ML Jones and his wife Myrtus of Ideal, Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Iowa, Georgia, and Florida.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 16, 2010, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

There will be no visitation prior to the service, but the family invites you to join them for lunch and fellowship in Hockenberry's Community Room following the service.
