Hazel Newton

Hazel L. (Shields) Newton was born November 26, 1931, to Nelson and Pearl (Briner) Shields in Decatur County, Iowa. She passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at Cass County Memorial Hospital Hospice Center in Atlantic, Iowa.


Hazel is survived by her loving husband of 61 years Hugh B. Newton of Lewis, IA; two sons, Dan (Cheryl) Newton of Atlantic, IA and Aaron Newton (Mel Dausel, girlfriend) of Plattsmouth, NE; two daughters, Diana (Wayne) Livingston of Lewis, IA and Donna (Ed) Leazenby of Martinsburg, WV; son-in-law, Lee Siedelmann (Kathy Endress, girlfriend) of Casey, IA; two brothers, Edgar (Beth) Shields and Joe (Ramadean) Shields; three sisters, Alice Herold, Cleone (Tom) Woughter and Virginia (Stephen) Howard; four brothers-in-law, Paul Smith, Al (Colleen) Newton, Tom (Floris) Newton and Gary (Lucille) Newton. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great- grandchildren and one great-great grandson; YFN, many nieces, nephews and others who called her Mom, Grandma or Friend.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Nelson and Pearl Shields; her daughter, Denise Siedelmann; her sister, Betty Wetzler; her brother, Jack Shields; as well as other sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Hazel did in-home day care for many years. She worked at Walton's assembling vacuum cleaners while helping her husband operate their Philips gas station in Atlantic. She enjoyed selling jewelry. She retired after fifteen years as an apartment manager for Knudsen Investment Company.

Hazel enjoyed sewing, especially making matching Easter dresses for her three daughters and herself. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. A few of the things she made were Barbie doll clothes, baby booties and sweaters. What she enjoyed more than anything was spending time with her family and playing games with her children and grandchildren. Hazel loved the outdoors, especially camping with her husband and family.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery Saturday, October 1, 2011, at 10:00 a.m., prior to the memorial service, which will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the United Congregational Methodist Church in Lewis, Iowa. There will be no formal visitation.
