Hazel Watts

February 20, 1938 — April 8, 2012

Hazel Louise Thorn was born February 20, 1938, the daughter of William Henry and Gladys Pauline (Kinman) Thorn in Coin, Iowa, and passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.

She grew up in Shenandoah, Iowa, graduating from Shenandoah High School. On June 22, 1957, Hazel married Frank D. "Butch" Watts at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Shortly after they were married they moved to Atlantic.

Hazel worked at the Ever Ready Carbon Plant in Red Oak after high school, and at Jaydon's and DeLong's, both in Atlantic. Most important to her was raising her five children. She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic.

Hazel was a strong, independent woman. She was a fighter, never letting adversity get the better of her. She was a big wrestling, Elvis, and Chuck Norris fan. She enjoyed gardening and doing yard work, roller skating and spending time with her cat.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Butch Watts; her son, Jerry Watts; her grandson, Jared DeWayne Watts; her parents, William and Gladys Thorn; and eight siblings.

Hazel is survived by her children, Teresa (Charlie) Smith of Atlantic, Tina (David) Douthit of Neosho, Missouri, Allan (Kerry) Watts of Harlan and Randy (Marsha) Watts of Atlantic; her grandchildren, D.J. Watts of Omaha, Nebraska, Travis Watts of Harlan, Brittney Watts, Zac Watts, Mat Watts, Mike Watts and Katie ( Randy) Anderson all of Atlantic, Josh Watts of Council Bluffs, Chris (Ashley) Douthit of Pryor, Oklahoma, and Sara Douthit of Neosho, Missouri; five great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a scriptural prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 13, 2012, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic.

Burial will be in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic.
