Herbert Hoover, 79, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday, August 23, 2008, at Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa.
Herbert Raymond Hoover was born June 28, 1929, in Walnut, Iowa, the son of Raymond Eldon and Pauline Gertrude (Pross) Hoover.
His early childhood was spent in Marne, Iowa, where he attended school; then the family moved to Atlantic, Iowa. He was a long time Atlantic resident until 2006 when his health made it necessary to become a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa.
Herb was an Army Veteran of the Korean War receiving the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
On February 24, 1990, he married Delores Lorraine (Wittmuss) Park at the Church of the Nazarene in Atlantic.
Herb had a variety of jobs throughout his life with the most recent one being at Bernard McMurphy Sod Company in Atlantic. He attended Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, was a member of the Eagles Lodge, the American Legion, the VFW and the AM-Vets.
He was an avid fisherman, with a motto of, "I'd rather be fishing". He also enjoyed spending time with his family, putting puzzles together and riding in the truck with Harry "Bub" Gaines.
Herb is survived by his wife, Delores of Anita, Iowa; his stepchildren, Samuel Park and his wife, Christine of Alamogordo, New Mexico, Janet Harvey and her husband, Keith of Anita, Iowa, Charles Park and his wife, Jamey of Atlantic, Iowa, and Joshua Park Jr. and his wife, Jacque of Atlantic, Iowa; his sister, Frances Jensen of Fort Dodge, Iowa; his niece, Karen Petersen and her husband, Paul of Fort Dodge, Iowa; his nephews, Ronald Jensen and his wife, Carolyn of Canton, Michigan, Donald Jensen and his wife, Marty of Warwick, Georgia, Steve Jensen and wife, Reta of New Haven, Michigan, Paul Jensen and his wife, Becky of Underwood, Minnesota, and Mark Jensen and wife, Julie of Walnut, Iowa, 7 step grandchildren, 22 great nieces and nephews, and 18 great-great nieces and nephews and other family and friends.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Pauline Hoover; his brother-in-law, Bernard Jensen, and his nephew, Allan Jensen.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2008, in the Chapel at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 26th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. also at Hockenberry Family Care. Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
