Ina Smith, 93, of Elk Horn, Iowa, passed away on her birthday, Friday, November 10, 2006, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.
Ina Marjorie Bales Smith was born on November 10, 1913, in Anita, Iowa, the daughter of Dan and Minnie Bales.
She lived in Iowa until the death of her father in 1922 at which time she moved to Colorado to be near her grandparents. The family returned to Iowa in 1930 and Ina graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1932. Following graduation, she taught school in Pymosa Township.
On September 15, 1934, Ina married Max Smith in Fort Collins, Colorado. They lived on the family farm until retiring in 1979, whereupon, they moved into the town of Elk Horn.
Ina had a special interest in the Elk Horn Library and was President of the Library Board for a number of years, after which, she continued her active interest in the library.
She was a member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church where she was a past member of Women's Circle. Ina also belonged to the Jolly Workers Club, the Rorbeck Sewing Club, the Outlook Study Club and was active in several card clubs.
Above all, she enjoyed her family, children, grandkids and the great grandkids. Grandma Ina loved to have them come home for visits and always baked cookies for them.
Ina and Max built their new home in Elk Horn in 1978 at 2005 Washington Street. Max passed away on October 4, 1995 and Ina continued to live there until 2004, at which time she moved into a four-plex in Elk Horn where she enjoyed her neighbors and friends. In 2006, Ina moved to the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.
She is survived by her two sons, Douglas Smith and his wife, Wanda of Elk Horn, Iowa, Charles and his wife, Teresa of Atlantic, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Stan Smith and his wife, Jill of Austin, Texas, Randy Smith and his wife, Un Yong of Burke, Virginia, Tim Smith of Portland, Oregon, Kim Christensen and her husband, Doug of Minnesota, Tina Meeske and her husband, Marty of Lincoln, Nebraska, Stephanie Lippincott and her husband, Tim of Papillion, Nebraska, Jose Lopez and his wife, Kathleen of Dallas, Texas, Craig Smith of Atlantic, Iowa and Denise Obrecht and her husband, Adam of Urbandale, Iowa; 17 great grandchildren, Niel, Paul and Sam Smith, Daniel, Debra and David Smith, Elijah, Micah, and Hannah Christensen, Ryan Smith, Lauren and Dalton Meeske, Aleisha and Kylie Lippincott, Rachel and Elena Lopez and Max Obrecht.
Ina was preceded in death by her husband, Max; her parents, Dan and Minnie Bales; her twin sister, Inez Ahlberg; two brothers, Earl and Floyd Bales; and a grandson, Michael Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa, with the Reverend Keith Menter officiating.
Visitation will begin at 12 Noon, Monday, with the family present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.
Committal services and interment will be in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery in Elk Horn, Iowa, followed by a fellowship and luncheon in the Fellowship Hall at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church.
The family is requesting that memorials go to either the Elk Horn Lutheran Church, the Elk Horn Library, or to Salem Lutheran Home, all in Elk Horn, Iowa.
Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa is handling the arrangements.
