Ioma M. Shaw was born October 25, 1915, in Oakland, Iowa, the daughter of William Walter and Bealuh Alice (Potter) Shaw and passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.
Omie graduated from the Oakland High School. On December 23, 1933, she married Virgil Franklin "Frank" Neighbors in Maryville, Missouri.
She taught in rural schools before going to work at the Anita Pharmacy, where she was employed for 43 years.
Omie was a member of the Pythian Sisters Lodge and the Anita United Methodist Church. She was elected the first woman City Council Member in Anita.
Omie was a very strong, independent woman who was always helpful to others. She and Frank enjoyed being "Winter Texans" for 19 years. Her hobbies included gardening, raising flowers and reading. In her later years, her greatest joy was having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren come to visit.
Omie was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Neighbors; her parents, William and Bealuh Shaw; and her brother, Ardith Shaw.
Surviving Omie are her sons, Bill (Sandy) Neighbors and Gary (Judy) Neighbors all of Anita, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Edna Lewis of Walnut, Iowa, and Judy Baxter of Tacoma, Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
The family is having a memorial gathering at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at the Anita Community Center to celebrate her life. Please join them for refreshments, coffee and fellowship.
A private family burial of ashes will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.
