Ione R. Pierce, 94, of Atlantic, Iowa, formerly of Anita, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.
Ione Rosalie Uhlig was born on January 13, 1914, in Guthrie County, Iowa, the daughter of Ivor and Florence (Cowden) Uhlig.
Ione was the Sweepstakes Baby at the Iowa State Fair in 1915. During her youth, she was baptized and a member of the First Methodist Church in Adair, Iowa. Ione attended Adair High School graduating in 1932.
She was united in marriage to Kenneth Pierce on June 20, 1932, in Maryville, Missouri. While living in Anita, Ione and Kenneth attended the First Christian Church. They moved to Atlantic 25 years ago and attended the First Church of Christ.
Ione's hobbies included performing her skit, "Chatting with Myrtle on the Phone" and decorating cakes for weddings, birthdays and, anniversaries. She enjoyed reading and writing poetry. She took second place in the Southwest Iowa Literary Guild in 2007, second only to her son, Dean.
She experienced her first jet plane flight to Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 84. Other favorite places Ione visited included; Colorado, the Cherokee Village, and the Grand Old Opry, where she was able to sit in the front row.
Ione is survived by her daughter, Marillys Julene Otteman and her husband, James of Wausa, Nebraska; and her sons, Oliver "Dwain" Pierce and his wife, Marian of Omaha, Nebraska, and Milo "Dean" Pierce of Anita, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Kirk Otteman, Vicki Otteman, Alan Pierce and his wife, Jill, Angie Pierce, Carrie Pierce, Amy Harvey, and Eric Pierce and his wife, Minako; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivor and Florence; her husband, Kenneth; her daughter, Colleen; her son, Dick; her sister, Shirley Enfield; and her brothers, Wallace and Clifford Uhlig.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa.
Memorials may be made to the Heritage House or the First Church of Christ, both of
Atlantic, Iowa.
