Irene Gaskill

Luella Irene Gaskill, 85, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.

Irene was born September 30, 1928, in Adair County, Iowa, the daughter of Harley Eugene and Ila Emma (Herriott) Hubbard. She was raised in the Guthrie County area and attended the Casey schools. She graduated from Casey high school with the class of 1946. On October 3, 1949, Irene was united in marriage to Clifton Gaskill Jr. in Denison, Iowa. In 1952, they moved to Atlantic, Iowa. Due to Clifton's employment, they spent ten years moving to various towns in Iowa before returning to and settling in Atlantic in 1963.

She began employment at the Atlantic Municipal Utilities Company in 1965 and retired from there after 25 years. Irene was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. She was also a volunteer with the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Atlantic Food Pantry and many other activities throughout the community. Irene was a giver and gave to her family, church and community. She and Clifton loved to square dance. She also enjoyed working in her yard.

Preceding Irene in death were her husband, Clifton; her parents, Gene and Ila Hubbard; her parents-in-law, Clif and Mary Gaskill; her brothers, Bruce Hubbard and Steve Messinger; sisters-in-law, Esther Gaskill, Kris (Clark) Wiese and Alberta Gaskill; and brothers-in-law, Kenneth (Lorraine) Gaskill and Dale Mains.

Surviving Irene are her son, Jim Gaskill of Omaha, NE; her daughter, Ila (Tom) Waldmann of Sherwood, AR; four grandchildren, David (Ashley), Teresa and Lisa Gaskill all of Omaha, NE and Nicole Waldmann-Comstock of Urbandale, IA; four great-grandchildren, Blaine Tippitt, twins Jeremy and Breanna Waldmann and Damion Gaskill; step-mother, Sally Hubbard of Washington, IA; brother, Glen (Millie) Hubbard of Des Moines, IA; sisters, Elaine (Art) Ryan of Newton, IA and Jeanne Callahan of Washington, IA; sister-in-law, Betty Main of Des Moines, IA; brothers-in-law, Bill (Jeri) Gaskill of Texas and Larry (Bobbie) Gaskill of Des Moines, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Atlantic Hospice, Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary or to the family to be sent to Irene's other designated organizations.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, June 12, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, Iowa.

Visitation with family will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.

The committal service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, at the Dalmanutha Cemetery, in rural Casey, Iowa, prior to the memorial service.
