Irene Margaret Jorgensen, the daughter of Matt and Margaret Weighton Mathisen, was born August 15, 1925, at the family farm southwest of Audubon, Iowa and died August 12, 2012, at the Friendship Home in Audubon at the age of 86 years, 11 months, and 27 days. Irene was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa. She attended rural school Leroy #8 and then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1943. She then held several jobs in Audubon. On January 10, 1946, she was united in marriage to Norman Hansen at her parents’ home near Audubon. Two sons Roger and Richard were born to this union. They farmed in the Kimballton and Hamlin areas until 1974 when Norman died. Irene then moved into Audubon and worked various jobs. On September 16, 1978, she married James Jorgensen at the Presbyterian Church in Audubon. In 1980 together they started a new business in Hamlin, Iowa called J&J Hardwoods. They operated the business together until they retired and moved into Audubon in August of 1989. Irene had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon for many years then in 1980 she became a member of the Hamlin Lutheran Church in Hamlin, Iowa. She was active in the women’s organization of the church and had held several offices. Her favorite hobby was making quilts and giving them to family members. Irene was preceded in death by her husband Norman Hansen; her daughter-in-law Carol Hansen; her parents; an infant brother and her other brothers Robert and wife Virginia Mathisen and Dale Mathisen; her father-in-law and mother-in-law Carl and Maggie Hansen, and her brother-in-law Marvin and wife Joyce Hansen. Survivors include her husband James H. Jorgensen of Audubon, Iowa, her sons Roger Hansen of Carson, Iowa, and Richard and wife Lyn Hansen of Audubon; her step-children Faye and husband Dean Christensen of Omaha, Nebraska, Diane and husband Jerry Hiatt of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mark and wife Pat Jorgensen of Denison, Iowa, and Linda and Mike Wede of Audubon; 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; her sisters-in-law Joann Mathisen of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Esther Foresman of Exira, Iowa; her brothers-in-law Phil and wife Donna Jorgensen of Longwood, Florida, and Frank and Doris Jorgensen of Debary, Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
Visitation:
The family will meet friends Wednesday evening at 6:00 at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock and Pastor Dwayne Ferguson on Thursday, August 16, 2012, at 10:30 A.M. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa.
