Jack Carlton Henry, the son of Ralph and Sylvia Smothers Henry, was born May 29, 1927, in Castana, Iowa and died July 30 2010, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 83 years, 2 months, and 1 day.
Jack was baptized at the Methodist Church and later confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa. He attended school in Castana and then graduated from the Mapleton High School with the Class of 1945. During High School, he enjoyed playing football, basketball, and baseball. On August 6, 1945, he was inducted into the United States Navy. During his tour of duty he served on the U.S.S. Hooper Island which was stationed at the Sasebo, Kyushu, Japan. Jack was honorably discharged on August 18, 1946. He returned home and helped his father operate their painting business.
On October 15, 1951, he was united in marriage to Inga Zittlau at the Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa. Six children were born to this union. Jack continued to paint with his father until Jack and Inga decided to move to Audubon, Iowa where Jack started his own painting business. He painted, stained woodwork, hung wall paper and did home interior design. Jack worked from new homes to old homes and many businesses. He met many wonderful people and made many long time friends. He retired from painting then enjoyed spending time with his family.
Jack was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Audubon. He enjoyed watching his children in sporting events, fishing with family and friends and loved watching the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed sharing a cup of coffee with his friends at his favorite local restaurant where he told stories about his childhood and fishing adventures while wearing his trademark paint splattered over-alls and chewing on his unlit cigar.
Preceding him in death was his infant son Randy Henry; his parents Ralph and Sylvia; his brothers-in-law: Bill Rich and Eugene Heffner.
Survivors include his wife Inga Henry of Audubon, Iowa; his children: Ralph and wife Maria Henry of Tiffin, Iowa, Gary Henry of Audubon, Jon and wife Carol Henry of West Palm Beach, Florida, Lisa and husband Scott Dreier on Manning, Iowa, and Lori Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren: Josh Henry of Columbus, Nebraska, Amy Henry of Carroll, Iowa, Vernon Henry and Angelica Henry both of Tiffin, Andrew, Jacob, and Zachary Dreier all of Manning, and Jenny Henry of Des Moines; 11 great grandchildren; his sisters: Lorna Henry of Mapleton, Iowa and Betty Rich of Holly Springs, Iowa; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Wanda Heffner of Sloan, Iowa, Horst and wife Judy Zittlau of Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa, Bruno and wife Pat Zittlau of Seattle, Washington, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Monday evening a 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
Service:
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Pastor Brian Licht officiating.
