Jack C. Long, 89, of Anita, Iowa, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2008, at Colonial Manor in Anita.
Jack Chester Long was born on June 5, 1918, in Anita, Iowa, the son of Chester Arthur and Mae (Kaskey) Long.
Jack lived his entire life in Anita. He attended public schools in Anita and graduated from Anita High School.
On December 28, 1941, he was married to Marilynn Kohl, at her parent's home in Anita. After their marriage he enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1942-1946, in Germany during WWII. Following his discharge Jack and Marilynn made their home in Anita, raised three daughters, and owned and operated C. A. Long & Son Home Furnishings and Long's Funeral Home.
Following retirement Jack began a 20 year career raising registered Black Angus Cattle. During his retirement his passion for farming and animals came to fruition. He loved the land, horses, black angus cattle, and all the stray cats and dogs, raccoons and deer that seemed to be drawn to his place. Most of all he loved people and no one was a stranger to him. Jack could draw anyone into a conversation with a smile on his face.
He was active in the Anita Chamber of Commerce, Anita Volunteer Fire Department and the Mason's. Jack was a member of the Anita United Methodist Church.
Jack is survived by his daughters, Dyann L. Green and her husband, Ronald of St. Joseph, Missouri, Janilynn L. Butler of Lakewood, Colorado, and Lynann L. Chance and her husband, John Haase of Lecompton, Kansas; grandchildren, Dacken Albertsen of San Diego, California, Danzel Albertsen and his wife, Gabrielle of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Dawsen Albertsen of New York, New York, Tarynn Butler and her husband Cody Overstreet of Denver, Colorado, Jaclynn Butler of Truckee, California, Robynn Butler of Portland, Maine, Wyatt Haase and his wife, Ann of Kansas City, Kansas, and Devon Kim and her husband, Tony of Lawrence, Kansas; two great-grandchildren, Jonah and Josie Kim; and his companion, Hilda Falconer.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester A. and Mae Long; his wife, Marilynn; and sister, Beulah Long Martin.
A Celebration of Life will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2008, at the Anita United Methodist Church in Anita.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Anita, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Anita Volunteer Fire Department.
Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita is in charge of the arrangements.
