Jerry McDermott

Mr. Jerry Lee McDermott, age 69, of Granger, IA, formerly of Atlantic, IA, passed away on Monday, October 16, 2023, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.

Jerry Lee McDermott was born on January 27, 1954, in Atlantic, IA, the son of Thomas and Lois (Steffens) McDermott. Jerry attended Atlantic Schools, graduating with the classic of 1972. He then married Devon Christensen on November 8, 1975. Jerry worked as a custodian at Washington Elementary School and part-time at Akin Building Center. In 2017, Jerry and Devon moved to Granger to live closer to their granddaughters, Elora and Kara. He kept busy working part-time at Gilcrest Jewett Lumber Company in Waukee. He most recently worked at Earl May. His favorite part of the day was when school got out, as the girls would walk down to see Grandpa and Grandma and get an after-school snack. Jerry and the girls loved to play basketball when the weather was nice.

Preceding in Jerry's death were his parents, Thomas and Lois McDermott.

Jerry is survived by his wife Devon of Granger, IA; daughter Ashley (Clint) Ibeling of Granger and their two daughters Elora and Kara; brother Rick (Melinda) McDermott; sister-in-law Donna (Greg) Zellmer; brother-in-law Dennis (Terri) Christensen; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A visitation with the family will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home.

Funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA, with an interment to follow at the Atlantic Cemetery. Pastor Lauri Boysen will be officiating the service.

A luncheon will take place following the committal service in the reception room of the Schmidt Family Funeral Home.
