Joan Knutter

Joan Marie Hackwell was born February 23, 1944, at the hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, the daughter of Edward Leo and Marie Dorothea (Wahlert) and passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

She graduated from Anita High School in 1962. On September 3, 1973, she married Karl William Knutter in Omaha, Nebraska. Initially living in rural Exira, Iowa, they moved to Adair in 1977 where they lived until 2003.

Joan worked at Clarinda Company in Atlantic for 30 years holding various positions. After Clarinda Company closed she went to work for Karl at Pelgas in Adair. In 2003 the couple moved to Pleasant Hope, Missouri. At that time Joan went to work for ANPAC where she worked as a Customer Service Representative in Claims Services.

She loved baking, weekend road trips with Karl and spending time with her grandchildren.

Joan is survived by her husband, Karl Knutter of Pleasant Hope; son, Mike (Jenny) Knutter of Adair; 3 grandchildren, Hayden, Lauren & Lucy; step-daughters, Deb Burrows of Belvidere, IL and Carlene Timm of Clinton, WI; 8 step-grandchildren, and 1 step-great-grandchild; brother, Gene (Naomi) Hackwell of Anita; sister, Sue (Andy) Christensen of Anita; sister-in-law, Pat Hammer of Woodstock, IL; sister-in-law, Barb Knutter of Lake Como, WI; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as many cousins and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marilyn Byrd; brothers, Edward Hackwell and Alan Hackwell (infant 6 mos); brother-in-law, John C. Byrd; sister-in-law, Dixie Hackwell; nephew, Kent Hackwell; aunts, uncles, cousins, and one step-daughter, Kelly England.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 18, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita, Iowa. Visitation will take place at the luncheon at the Anita Community Center following the memorial service. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date.
