Joan Kriens

Joan Kriens, 88, of Casey, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

She was born April 28, 1927, at home in rural Adair County, Iowa, to Gustav and Hilda (Langbehn) Wedemeyer. Joan was raised in Adair and attended Adair High School. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Kriens at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa, on April 30, 1949. They made their home in Des Moines until 1960, when they moved to Norwalk, Iowa until 1966, and then moved to Raytown, Missouri, as Kenneth was transferred to that area by his employer. Kenneth passed away in November of 1978. Joan retired from her employment with the federal government and moved to Casey in 1990 and remained there.

Joan was a member of St. John's Lutheran church in Casey. She was a past cemetery board member in Casey. Joan also was a member of the Menlo American Legion Auxiliary. She was very interested in genealogy. She enjoyed spending time at the meal site in Adair visiting with friends and was always active with many things at church and in the community. Joan loved to spend time in the country listening to polka music at her retreat.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Kriens; her parents, Gustav and Hilda Wedemeyer; her sister, Ruth (Kenneth) Powell; and her brother, Glennard Wedemeyer.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Karen Kriens of Lee's Summit, MO and Karol Kriens of Juneau, AK; her grandsons, Kyler (fiancé Margaret) Turner of Washington, D.C., and Keyden (Rachel) Turner of Columbus, OH; sister, Betty Krogh of Atlantic, IA; sister-in-law, Donna Wedemeyer of Eldora, IA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation with family will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a funeral starting at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair.

Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Casey, IA. Luncheon will be served at St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey following the committal service.
