John Hansen

John Leroy Hansen, 53, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.


He was born January 27, 1960, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Wilbur and Nancy (Cowherd) Hansen. Wilbur married Sharon Toepfer July 9, 1969, when John was only 9 years old. Wilbur and Sharon then raised John and the blended brothers and sisters to make one family.

John attended Atlantic schools graduating from Atlantic High School. On February 14, 1981, John married Leona Marie (Adams) Holaday in the United Church of Christ in Atlantic.

John's employment career spanned from working at Seamless Guttering & Siding, cooking at the Country Kitchen, being an over the road truck driver, to the most recent and lasting 18 years as a truck driver and lab person for Henningsen Construction Company in Atlantic.

John was a Past Master of the Masonic Grove Lodge 492 and had served in the Army National Guard.

Favorite pastimes of his were fishing, watching John Wayne movies, anything that had to do with computers and electronics and most of all spending time with his grandson.

Those surviving John are his children, Toni (Randy) Pieken of Atlantic and Matt (Laura) Hansen of Avoca; his grandson, Zander Pieken of Atlantic; his parents, Wilbur and Sharon Hansen of Atlantic; brothers, Dennis Toepfer of Atlantic, David (Marjorie) Toepfer of Storm Lake and Paul Hansen of Atlantic; sisters, Daphne Haskins of Atlantic, Lisa Hansen of Blair, NE and Kristie (Tim) Malcom of Griswold; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Preceding John in death were his mother, Nancy Hansen, and his grandparents.

A Masonic Service will take place at 1:30 p.m. and a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, all at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa. Family will visit with friends after the Masonic Service or at the luncheon after the funeral service. Burial will be in Southlawn Memorial Gardens in Atlantic.
