John L. Jacobsen, 73, of Elk Horn, Iowa, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2006, at his home.
John Lawrence Jacobsen was born on July 29, 1933, at the home place 3 � miles south of Elk Horn, Iowa, the son of John and Katherine Jacobsen.
John was baptized and confirmed at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church and graduated from Elk Horn High School in 1952. He then attended one year of college at Iowa State University.
John was married to Barbara Larsen at the First Lutheran Church in El Paso, Texas on May 29, 1954.
He enlisted in the United States Army in 1954 and took basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas and Fort Bliss, Texas. He served with the 443rd Army Battalion at Lindsey Air Force Base in Weisbaden, Germany. Barb joined him in October of 1954 where their daughter Suzanne Renee was born in June 1955. They arrived home in 1956, and started farming at the home place. Other children born to this union were Joel Brian, Amy Joan, Mark Alan, Deborah Linn and Karen Jean.
John was an active member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.
He was named Master Pork Producer in 1990. He was currently serving on the Salem Lutheran Home Board and was a member of the Elk Horn American Legion Post #322. He and Barb enjoyed traveling to Branson, Missouri and Florida. John and Barb were honored as King and Queen at Tivoli Fest in May 2003.
John loved farming and raising hogs and cattle in partnership with his son, Mark. He also enjoyed growing sweet corn as a community project. John was very patriotic and a strong Republican.
John was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed because of his wonderful sense of humor and his kind and caring ways.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara of 52 years of Elk Horn, Iowa; six children, Suzanne Van Bockern and her husband, Tom of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Joel Jacobsen and his wife, Karen of Adel, Iowa, Amy Cook and her husband, John of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mark Jacobsen of Elk Horn, Iowa, Deb Te Slaa and her husband, Loren of Orange City, Iowa and Karen Jacobsen Oakley and her husband Chris of Thomasville, Georgia; 14 grandchildren., Andrea, Jeff and Elizabeth Van Bockern; Drew, Molly, Abby and Emma Jacobsen; Katie, Ryan and Jake Cook; Emily, Nick, Sam and Sydney Te Slaa; sister, Priscilla Hansen; sister-in-law, Bev Henningsen and her husband, Toby; sister-in-law, Rose Anne Poldberg and her husband, Robert; nephews, Jerry, Randy, and Jamie Henningsen; Jordan and Ryan Larsen; Jim and Kent Jordan; nieces, Joni Larsen and Janet Krengel; and many cousins and friends
He is preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Harvey and Anna Larsen; brother-in-law, James Larsen; and nephew Brent Larsen.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 5, 2006, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Elk Horn, Iowa, with Pastor Keith Menter officiating. Pallbearers are Joel Jacobsen, Mark Jacobsen, Tom Van Bockern, John Cook, Loren Te Slaa and Chris Oakley. Honorary pallbearers are Douglas Smith, Monte Hoegh, Warren Jacobsen, Galen Sornson, Howard Sorensen, Dale Nelson, James Bieker, Charles Andersen, Toby Henningsen and Cy Petersen.
Burial is in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12 Noon Wednesday, October 4, 2006, with the family present from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Elk Horn Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Salem Lutheran Homes or a memorial of your choice.
Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic is in charge of the arrangements.
