John Daniel Weresh, M.D., 84, a retired Atlantic physician died at his home on February 21, 2015.

John was born November 29, 1930, to John A. and Mivinda (Powell) Weresh in Creston, Iowa. Creston was his home until he graduated from junior college.

He met his wife, Mary Clara Schwitzer, when attending the University of Iowa, where he received his medical degree. John and Mary were married August 26, 1955. John joined an internship in Flint, Michigan, where he was employed until he entered the Navy in 1957. He served as Chief Medical Officer for the 6th fleet on board the USS Pocono for two tours of sea duty in the Mediterranean during the Lebanon crisis in 1958. He also served as medical officer for the naval prison in Norfolk, Virginia.

Doc and Mary settled in Atlantic in 1959, where he started a private practice that he continued for 39 years until retirement in 1998. In 1970, Doc served as the President of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and was the first medical professional to serve in that capacity. He was a very active member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

John enjoyed mentoring and tutoring youth through the Atlantic School Mentoring Program and also the YMCA After School Program. Golf was his favorite pastime. He also enjoyed playing his violin for extremely small audiences.

Preceding John in death were his parents. Surviving him is his wife, Mary, (their 60th anniversary would be this August); his daughters, Joan (Curtis) Broek of Urbandale, IA and Ann (Troy) Cormican of Paris, KY; his sons, John Andrew Weresh of Seattle, WA and Dr. Matthew (Melissa) Weresh of Clive, IA; his grandchildren, Rachel (James) Spiller, Sara (John) Engelhart, John Broek (fiancé Alicia Guca), Andrew Weresh, Elizabeth Weresh, John Henry Weresh, Alex Weresh, Salem Weresh, Hank Weresh, Kaycee Cormican and Sidney Cormican; a great-grandson, Judd Spiller; a sister, Ann (John) Marino of Plano, TX; and 3 nephews, Mark Marino, Kevin Marino and Tony Marino.

There will be visitation with family from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa, with burial in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for designation later.
