John Frederick (Jack) Ulveling, Sr., 70, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
He was born February 8, 1943, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of John and Wanda (Heinowski) Ulveling. Jack grew up in Remsen, Iowa, and attended St. Mary's Catholic school in Remsen until his senior year. His senior year, he attended and graduated from Marcus High in Marcus, Iowa. He then attended Creighton University in Omaha for two years, University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a semester and graduated from Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a degree in HVAC design.
On May 2, 1966, he was united in marriage to Barbara Casteel. To this union four children were born, John, Robert, Tamara and Laura. Jack worked for American Automatic Ice Machine for two years. He then went to work for Frigidaire in Minneapolis in advertising. He was transferred to Chicago for 2 ½ years where he was a National Sales Trainer. From Chicago he was transferred to Decatur, IL as the Division Manager for 3 ½ years. In December of 1976 he and his family moved to Atlantic, Iowa. He first worked for Camblin Plumbing & Heating as an HVAC engineer until 1983. Then from 1983 until 1993 he worked for Prawl Engineering in Omaha, Nebraska, as an Air Balancer. Jack and Barb owned the Spirit Shoppe in Atlantic from 1987-1992. In 1993, he started his own business, Air Systems Analyzers, which he was a partner with his son Robert until he retired in 2008. During his time in Minneapolis and Chicago, Jack served six years in the United Stated National Guard.
Jack was a hard worker and a perfectionist to a fault. He was dependable, a joker and crafty. He enjoyed conversation, music, car shows and swap meets, collecting die casts, traveling, woodworking, and restoring his home. He loved his grandchildren and compiling family photographs for his "brag" books. He had an appreciation for wine. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing and was an avid fan of Rusty Wallace and Tony Stewart.
Jack is survived by his wife, Barb of Atlantic, IA; his children, John F. Ulveling Jr. of Marshalltown, IA, Robert K. Ulveling and fiancé Cindy Schlake of Atlantic, IA and Lori and husband Ken Namanny of Cumberland, IA; his grandchildren, Ashley and Andrew Ulveling and Kyra, Koby, Kipp and Kalynn Namanny; foster daughter Tammy Neal and her daughters, Kylie and Alyssa Neal; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Wanda Ulveling; his parents-in-law; his daughter, Tamara Lynn Ulveling; and his brother, Max Ulveling.
There will be no scheduled visitation.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Monday, February 10, 2014, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.
