June Maxine (Kennedy) Clemens, formerly of Atlantic, Iowa, and Trenton, Missouri, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, Minnesota, at the age of 90.
She is survived by sons, Mark E. (Karen) Clemens, of Port Townsend, Washington, and children, Malorie, Tyler and Miles, and their mother, Karen (Lang) Clemens, of Olympia, Washington; Jon D. (Suzy) Clemens of Harlan, Iowa, and children, Megan, Philip and Ryan; and daughter, Jill E. (Mark) Bublitz of Brainerd, Minnesota, and children, Chuck, Wil and Mark; great-grandchild Elsa Mae Bublitz; sister-in-law, Doris (Gates) Kennedy of Trenton; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
June was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Clemens; parents, Solon N. and Jessie E. (Roller) Kennedy; siblings, Eva, Orpah, Wilson, Ruth, Dean and Roller; and sister-in-law, Barbara Tate, of Spickard.
The Kennedy family lived in the Trenton, Missouri, area, for many years near Laredo. While there, June was born in Trenton. The family continued farming near Laredo through her graduation from Trenton High School in 1939. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. She married Charles Clemens in Long Beach, California, on Nov. 28, 1945. The couple then returned to Missouri where they lived in Mr. Clemens' home town of Spickard, before he enrolled at the University of Missouri in 1948 to study civil engineering. In 1950 they moved to Iowa where he began his 36-year career with the Iowa Department of Transportation as a civil engineer. That career journey began in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where June graduated from Coe College in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature. The family's final move was to Atlantic, Iowa, in 1965.
Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa. A private family graveside service will be held at the Atlantic Cemetery.
