Larry Ryan

Larry Lewis Ryan, 71, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2013, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

He was born October 5, 1941, the son of Lewis and Joye (Dodge) Ryan in Creston, Iowa. Larry grew up in rural Massena, Iowa. He graduated from Cumberland & Massena High School in 1959. Larry was united in marriage to Jean McKee on August 24, 1962, in Maryville, Missouri, and they moved to Atlantic.

Larry was a self-employed mechanic at Ryan Garage for 15 years. He worked at Glacier for 22 years and he enjoyed ranching for the last 25 years. He had a great love for Angus cattle and Quarter horses. Larry and his brother, Doug, enjoyed drag racing their Hemi Roadrunner in the 70s and later built a Dodge Charger circle track car that he raced for several seasons.

He was a member of the Victoria 4-H Club for 6 years and a member of R-Calf USA and American Quarter Horse Association.

Larry is survived by his wife, Jean Ryan, of Atlantic, IA; his two daughters, Carol (Jeff) Anderson and Casey (Mike) Westphalen; six grandchildren: Brooke, Shannon and Whitney Anderson and Jordan, Carly and Brandon Westphalen; 6 great-grandchildren: Devin, Drake, Drew, Jeffrey, Ryker and Kayler; three brothers: Rich, Doug and Denny; two sisters: Janice and Judy; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis "Louie" and Joye Ryan and his great-grandson, Jase Anderson.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 29, 2013, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 30, 2013, also at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, Iowa.

Monetary donations will be given to the Cass County Cowpokes and the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic, Iowa.
