Following a valiant eight-and-a-half year battle with cancer, LaverneEugene Akers, 59, peacefully passed away on September 22, 2009, inhis home in Mountain View, Stone County, Arkansas, surrounded by hisimmediate family.Services were held Saturday, September 26, at the Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints in Mountain View. Graveside services willbe at the Exira Cemetery. Laverne was born June 15, 1950, in Carroll, Iowa, to Nyle and Eva MaeBancroft Akers. He grew up on the family farm in rural Brayton andattended the Exira schools, graduating with the Exira High Schoolclass of 1968. Following graduation he attended Iowa State Universityfor two years. In 1970 Laverne joined the United States Air Force,serving at the Regional Hospital of Sheppard Air Force Base inWichita Falls, Texas, as a psychiatric aide until his honorabledischarge in 1975. In 1978 Laverne received his Bachelor of Sciencedegree from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. Laverne was united in marriage to Joyce Elaine Glines in 1970. He wasemployed by Haliburton of Galveston, Texas, working on offshore oilrigs. He started out on a field crew and worked up to a crew manager.In 2000 after a 20-year career, Laverne retired to Mountain View,Arkansas, where he enjoyed woodworking and remodeling his home.Laverne and Joyce remarried in December 1994.Laverne is survived by his wife, Joyce; his father, Nyle Akers, ofBrayton; his children and their spouses, Kobi and Mary Akers ofHouston, Texas, Araminta May of Arkansas, Angeline and Leon Buschowof Dallas, Texas, and Natasha Akers of Mountain View; step-daughters,Mistie and Milton Welch of Arizona, and Melba and Jeff Phelps ofHouston, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; his brothers and sisters.Karen and David McElwain, of Wayne, Nebraska, Jeanette and SteveFerin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ken and Tami Akers of Sarasota, Florida,Cathy and Brad Baldwin of McDonough, Georgia, and Shirley and DeanChesnut of Casey, Iowa.He was proceeded in death by his mother Eva Mae Akers and his brotherDuane Akers.

Celebration of life graveside memorial services will be held Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at the Exira Cemetery in Exira, Iowa.
