Lawrence H. Kuhr, 93, of Avoca, passed away early Wednesday morning at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, where he had been a patient for the past ten days.
The only child of Henry and Lizzie Kuhr, he was born April 12, 1916, in a rural home 9 miles south of Walnut. The next spring, his family moved to a farm 6 miles south of Walnut where he lived and farmed until moving to Atlantic in 1973.
He attended country school and graduated from Walnut High School in 1934. Lawrence was confirmed in the Old German Lutheran Church of Walnut, which became the United Church of Christ, and he was a member of the Church in Walnut and then Atlantic.
In 1940, Lawrence married Dagny Hansen and they became the parents of 2 children, Carolyn and Richard. Dagny passes away in 1994 and he remained in his home in Atlantic until moving to Peace Haven Home in Walnut in 2005. In May 2006, he moved into the Avoca Assisted Living and became a resident of Avoca Nursing Home in February of this year.
Surviving is his daughter, Carolyn Goddard and husband John of Grand Island, New York; son, Richard Kuhr and wife, Janelle of Walnut; 3 granddaughters: Christine Goddard Delagrave and her husband Simon of Stoneham Massachusetts, Laura Goddard of Germantown, Maryland; Patricia Kuhr Heilskov and her husband Brandon of Hampton, Iowa; 1 grandson, Derek Kuhr and his wife Amy of Omaha, Nebraska; also 2 great grandsons, Alexander Kuhr and Caiden Heilskov.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dagny, and a granddaughter Traci Kuhr.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
Visitation with family present will be held on Friday, April 17, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.
