Leo M. Jacobsen, 83, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and a former Adair, Iowa resident, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
Leo Milford Jacobsen was born June 12, 1924, on the family farm near Exira, Iowa, the son of Hans and Dorothy (Jessen) Jacobsen. He was raised in the Exira area and graduated from High School in 1943.
Leo married Roberta Curtis on September 25, 1943, in Audubon, Iowa. Leo then joined the U.S. Marine Corp and served on a ship that was bombed during WWII. Upon his return from the service, he and his wife moved to Adair, Iowa, where Leo worked for a wholesale plumbing and heating company. Leo and Bobby bought the company in 1976 and operated it for 25 years, until their retirement.
Leo was a member of the Adair United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the local V.F.W. posts.
Leo enjoyed playing golf, cards and fishing. He loved being around people and they appreciated his amazing sense of humor.
He is survived by his three sons, Mike Jacobsen and his wife, Darlene of South Carolina, Dave Jacobsen and his wife, Peggy of San Diego, California, Curt Jacobsen of Johnston, Iowa; his two daughters, Valerie Jacobsen of Norwalk, Iowa and Denise Woody and her husband, John of West Des Moines, Iowa.
Also surviving are two brothers, Arnie Jacobsen and his wife, Betty of California and Donald Jacobsen of Arizona; two sisters, Arlene Skain and her husband, Dick of California, and Lucille May of Elk Horn, Iowa; as well as eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Dorothy Jacobsen, and his wife,
Bobbie.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 8, 2007, at the Adair United Methodist Church with Chaplain Jerry Newswander of the Bickford Cottages in West Des Moines officiating.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Adair.
Committal services and interment will be in the Sunnyhill Cemetery, followed by fellowship and lunch in the church fellowship hall.
The family is requesting that memorials go to Hospice of Central Iowa or to the Jhonny and Ronni Center for Aging Adults, West Des Moines, Iowa.
