Leona Christine Rubel, the daughter of John and Anna Marie Juel Lykke, was born September 19, 1911, east of Kimballton, Iowa and died January 5, 2010, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 98 years, 3 months and 17 days.
Leona was baptized at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa and confirmed at the Hamlin Lutheran Church in Hamlin, Iowa. She attended rural school at the Sharon Center School near Kimballton and graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1931.
On December 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to Marion Rubel at the Lutheran Parsonage in Atlantic, Iowa. They farmed until 1958 when they moved to Audubon. Leona worked at Coast to Coast in Audubon until she retired. Marion died December 4, 1992. In 1998, Leona moved to Friendship Village. She enjoyed visiting with her neighbors at the village, especially during those summer evenings when they could sit outside. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy and she looked forward to their visits. She had a great appreciation for flowers and birds, especially cardinals. Leona was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband Marion, were her parents, her brothers: Clarence Lykke, Arnold Lykke, and LaVerne Lykke.
Survivors include her sons and their wives: Jerry and Judy Rubel of Dakota City, IA; Danny and Marilyn Rubel of Stanton, IA; her grandchildren: Kevin and Elaine Rubel of Fort Dodge, IA; Robyn and Bart Peterson of Dakota City IA; Marla and Mickey Anderson of Stanton, IA; Danis and Bret Hultman of Red Oak, IA; Troy and Kari Rubel of Dakota City, IA; her great-grandchildren: Tanya and Kendra Peterson of Dakota City, IA; Kelsey and Kaitlyn Rubel of Fort Dodge, IA Ragen and Reece Anderson of Stanton, IA; Keisha, Kolton, Kaycee and Karson Rubel of Dakota City, IA and Connor and Easton Hultman of Red Oak, IA; her sister Agnes Jacobsen of Exira, IA and sisters-in-law: Thelma Lykke of Jefferson, IA and Wilma Rubel of Audubon, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
Visitation:
Friends may call at their convenience at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Kay E. Steddom on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa
