Lillie Berniece Huey

Lillie (Lil) Berniece Huey, the daughter of Alfred M. and Mabel E. (Christensen) Petersen, was born December 2, 1927, at her parents’ home in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died October 26, 2018, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 24 days.
Lil was baptized at the Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa. She attended the “Spring Valley School” in Douglas Township through the eighth grade. Lil then worked as a live in helper for several families before marriage.
On March 20, 1949, she was united in marriage to Glee I. Huey at the Methodist Church in Irwin, Iowa. They were blessed with two children Gaylin Glee and Vickie Jo. She was a homemaker but this included many duties. She raised chickens, milked cows, drove the tractor when needed, set bales of hay on the elevator from the hay rack, baked almost everything and anything, prepared the best meals, and did all the book keeping. Lil always had a vegetable garden and enjoyed canning all the fresh produce. She really enjoyed the family vacations every year many times traveling to family reunions. Glee died July 8, 2015. Lil continued to live on the farm and greatly appreciated that her daughter Vickie and granddaughter Brittney had moved back to this area. They helped her at home and Lil always was happy to share recipes and memories with them.
Lil was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa and was a member of the Ladies Circle. She was a member of the 3M Club, a neighborhood club she belonged to for many years. Her favorite time of every week day was 9:00 a.m. That was coffee with “Her Boys”. She loved a table full. Birthdays were always celebrated with family and friends gathering. Everyone wanted her confetti angel food cake and salmon sandwiches. She also enjoyed being with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband Glee I. Huey; her son-in-law Jim Nicholl, Sr.; her parents; her brothers and sisters Levi Petersen, Virgil Petersen, Norma and husband Don Miller, Ken Petersen, and Arlene Nelson; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Roletta and husband John Joachimsen, Ethel and husband Archie Robinson, Mabel and husband Hiram Dicks, Bonnie and husband Gerald Vroman, Vesta Huey, Beth Huey, Myrtle Krejci, Roy Huey, Glen and wife Velma Huey, and Roy Carbo.
Survivors include her children Gaylin and wife Marcia Huey and Vickie Nicholl all of Audubon, Iowa; her grandchildren Brittney and husband Shawn Robinson of Hamlin, Iowa, Bret Leymaster of Carroll, Iowa, Beau and wife Bre Leymaster of Leon, Iowa, Bessie and husband Jack Campbell of Winchester, Kansas, Anita Nicholl of Omaha, Nebraska, Jim Nicholl, Jr., Roylene and Rick Bald all of Audubon, Iowa, Jeaney and husband Rick Peterson of Junction City, Kansas, and Lisa and husband Craig Miller of Ankeny, Iowa; 25 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; her brothers Allen and wife Diane Petersen, Larry and wife Dianna Petersen, her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Delores Petersen and Pat Esbeck both of Atlantic, Iowa, Merle Carbo of Atlanta, Georgia, Emil Krejci of O’Fallon, Missouri, Sandra Huey of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
The family will meet with friends on Tuesday evening October 30, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Kathy Kluis on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The honorary casket bearers will be Allan Petersen, Larry Petersen, Dick Ellis, Brett Nissen, Darrell Wittrock, George Sorensen, Ralph Dent, Robert Hansen, Charles Boldt, Orin Bruhn. The casket bearers will be Bret Leymaster, Beau Leymaster, Shawn Robinson, Norlan Rasmussen, Fred Nelson, and Doug Sorensen.
