Lloyd Berg

Lloyd Henry Berg was born January 23, 1923, in Brayton, Iowa, the son of Nels and Hertha (Hansen) Berg and passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Colonial Manor in Anita at the age of 86 years.

Lloyd started school near Brayton attending country schools in Audubon and Cass County. He finished school at Norway Center and Victor schools.

He was united in marriage to Mary Leona Ecklin on June 18, 1944, in Atlantic, Iowa. Leona passed away on December 4, 2002. The couple spent almost 60 years together as husband and wife.

On February 28, 1944, Lloyd joined the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged on January 4, 1946. He returned to Cumberland and was a carpenter, helping to build many barns while he learned to farm. The couple then moved to the farm in Wiota where they raised their sons, Allan, David and Joel.

On August 9, 2003, Lloyd married Lola Darrow. They resided in Wiota until becoming residents of Colonial Manor in Anita.

Lloyd was a member of the Wiota Lutheran Church and served on the church board. He was involved with the county conservation commission. In his spare time, Lloyd enjoyed bowling, wood working, and card club and neighbor picnics.

Survivors include his wife, Lola of Anita, IA; his sons, Allan Berg and his wife, Linda and David Berg and his wife, Paulett all of Marshalltown, IA and Joel Berg and his wife, Peggy of Anita, IA; his eight grandsons, Philip (Kara) Berg , Daniel Berg, Brian (Jennifer) Berg, Adam Berg, Jeremy Berg and his fiancé Nicole, Nathan (Amanda) Berg, Matt Mardesen and his friend Joni Fagan and Erik (Theresa) Mardesen; nine great- grandsons, Andrew, Nik, Evan, and Zane Berg, Cooper Mardesen, Devon Stonehocker, Tyler Kolker, Brady Fagen and Conner Fagen; four great-granddaughters, Samantha, Noelani, and Isabelle Berg and Trixie Cantrell; his brother, Delmar (Wanda) Berg; his sisters, Lorraine Tharp and Ivadell Thomas; Lola's children, Sharon (Virgil) Sanny of Bedford, Iowa, Kathy (John) Schmitt of Atlantic and David (Mary) Darrow of Omaha, Nebraska; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Leona Berg; his parents, Nels and Hertha Berg; his grandson, Christopher Berg; his great-granddaughter, Stephanie Marie Berg; his brother, Merlyn Berg; his niece, Pamela Berg; and his brothers-in-law, Harold Thomas, Warren Tharp and Gene Hayes.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic.

Burial will be held in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., (prior to the service) on Saturday, also at Hockenberry's in Atlantic.
