Lloyd Laverne Oakley

Lloyd Laverne Oakley, the son of George and Nellie (Howey) Oakley, was born February 4, 1932, at his parents’ home in Audubon County, Iowa and died May 2, 2017, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 2 months, and 28 days.
Lloyd was baptized at the Christian Church in Audubon, Iowa. He attended the Audubon Community Schools and while going to school full time he also was the projectionist for the Rose Theater. On April 25, 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his tour of duty he received his GED and was trained as a paratrooper. Lloyd served in the 82nd Airborne Division which was stationed stateside but he completed numerous jumps from an aircraft. He was honorably discharged on April 26, 1953 and returned to help operate the family farm.
On June 27, 1954, he was united in marriage to Geneva Crees in Audubon, Iowa. They were blessed with three daughters Debra, Teresa, and Donna. They continued to farm until 1959. In 1960 Lloyd was hired by Aagaard Construction and worked basically as a cabinet maker. Lloyd worked for Aagaard’s until 1973 when he started his own construction business. Over the period of years he remodeled numerous houses, built six new homes in Audubon and two new homes at Lake Panorama in Panora, Iowa before he retired.
Lloyd was a member of the Christian Church in Audubon, Iowa and a member of Audubon Post # 120, American Legion. After he returned from the service he entertained the crowd on July 4, 1953, by parachuting from a plane and landing at the Audubon County Fairgrounds. Lloyd enjoyed building and flying remote controlled model airplanes with his brother George and good friend Blaine Kearney. He also enjoyed collecting anything that had to do with Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang. But most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was his daughter Debra Lemke; his parents; his sisters Dorothy and husband Frank Schmidt and Norma and husband Paul Norris; his brothers George Oakley, Jim Oakley, Howard Oakley, and Allen Oakley; and faithful companion his little dog Missy.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years Geneva Oakley of Audubon, Iowa; his daughters Teresa and husband Roger Boge of Klemme, Iowa and Donna Murray and partner Rob Glidden of Audubon, Iowa; his 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren soon to be 21; and his sisters-in-law Ruby and husband Merle Blake of Audubon, Iowa, Shirley Keasy and partner Dan Pemble of Scranton, Iowa, Janice Oakley of Audubon, Iowa, Lois and husband Larry Thygesen of Audubon, Iowa, and Deloris Wahlert of Exira, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives; his loving dog Lexi Jo, and many friends.
The family will meet with friends Friday evening at 5:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Dwaine Simonsen on Saturday afternoon May 6, 2017, at 2:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The honorary casket bearers will be his granddaughters and great grandchildren Melissa Chambers, Stacy Schmidt, Lori Jo Thomas, Bridget Schrader, Shannon Boge-Miller, Kati Murray, and Riley Christensen, Jordan Schrader, Jase Namanny, Kelsie Schrader, Jocelyn Chambers, Corbin Chambers, Sarah Schmidt, Emma Schmidt, Jarrett Miller, Oliver Boge, Evan Boge, Russell Thomas, Callen Thomas, Aiden Murray, Hailey Jo Murray, Jameson Murray, and Nolan Murray. The casket bearers will be his grandsons and great grandsons Matt Chambers, Adam Boge, Eric Murray, and Colby Christensen, Brycen Boge, and Travis Schmidt.
