Lois Jean Kness

October 3, 1925 — June 11, 2011

Lois Jean Kness, the daughter of George and Henrietta Jensen Kauffman, was born October 3, 1925, at her parents’ home in Audubon County, Iowa and died June 11, 2011, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 8 months, and 8 day. Lois was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa. She attended the Viola Elementary School in Viola, Iowa and then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1944. On September 2, 1944, she was united in marriage to Howard (Hod) Kness in Liberal, Kansas. Four children Peggy, Stephen, Nancy, and Bill were born to this union. Howard was in the service and Lois lived where he was stationed. During this time she was a home maker. Howard was honorably discharged and they returned to Audubon in 1945. Lois worked for the Audubon County Soldiers Relief Board and also was a clerk at Jensen’s Clothing until they moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1968. Lois was employed with the Principal Life Company until she retired in 1988. Lois and Hod moved to Lake Panorama in 1989. Howard died November 24, 1994. Lois enjoyed her lake home in Panora for many years then moved to Johnston, Iowa in 2003. In June of 2007, she moved to the Calvin Community Retirement Home then later moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon in December of 2010. Lois was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon and was a charter member of the Mariner’s Club. She loved spending time with her family and especially enjoyed following all her grandchildren’s activities. She enjoyed spending time at the lake, traveling, and cooking. She was an avid college sports fan. Her favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. Lois was preceded in death in addition to her husband Howard (Hod); by her parents; and her brothers and sister George Kauffman, Gordon Kauffman, and Phyllis Kness. Survivors include her children Peggy and husband Wayne Rasmussen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Stephen and wife Dana Kness of Holdridge, Nebraska, Nancy Peters, and Bill and wife Lori Kness all of Urbandale, Iowa; her grandchildren Ryan and wife Jennifer Rasmussen and Robin Rasmussen all of Cedar Rapids, Kristene and husband Craig Ganek of Waucona, Illinois, Ashley Rasmussen of Cedar Rapids, Jarad and wife Courtney Kness of San Diego, California, Austin Peters of Des Moines, Iowa, Alyssa Peters of Denver, Colorado, Carson Kness and Cali Kness both of Urbandale; her great grandchildren Nicholas, Nathan, Shiloh, and Cameron; her brothers and sister Charlotte and husband Larry Fett of Vinton, Iowa, Clark (Sam) and wife Lois Kauffman and Charles and wife Linda Kauffman all of Audubon, Iowa, Douglas Kauffman of Estherville, Iowa; her sister-in-law Sue Kauffman of Des Moines; her brother-in-law Mike Kness of Albia, Iowa, her aunt Irene Starett of Audubon; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorials:
The family prefers memorials to the Friendship Home, 714 N. Division Street, Audubon, Iowa 50025.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends on Tuesday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Reverend Jack DePond on Wednesday, June 15. 2011, at 2:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, Iowa.

The family will meet with friends on Tuesday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa.
