Lonnie Eugene Barber

March 14, 1939 — February 16, 2018

Lonnie Eugene Barber, the son of Robert and Harriet Ann (Sanders) Barber, was born March 14, 1939, in Laurinburg, North Carolina and died February 16, 2018, at the Hillcrest Nursing home in Bellevue, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 11 months, and 2days.
Lonnie was baptized at the Baptist Church in McColl South Carolina. He attended the McColl community schools graduating with the High School Class of 1957. Following High School, Lonnie enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. During his tour of duty he served as an electronic technician on aircraft and later became an X-ray technician. He was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska.
In 1958 Lonnie was united in marriage to Marion Gavin in Omaha. They were blessed with five children, Dale, Chris, Rita, Brian, and Ronnie. Lonnie served for over eight years in the Air Force and was honorably discharged. He then was employed as a mail handler at the U.S. Post office in Omaha and also worked pat-time at Sears.
On August 2, 1983, he was united in marriage to Ardyth Zinke in Las Vegas, Nevada. They lived and worked in the Omaha, Nebraska area for many years until they retired and moved to Exira, Iowa where they helped take care of Ardyth’ s mother Annis Zinke. Ardyth died on July 28, 2014. Lonnie continued to live in Exira until he moved to the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Bellevue, Nebraska in 2015.
Lonnie enjoyed watching sports especially football and basketball. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry, and doing mechanical work.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his wife Ardyth Faye Barber; his parents; and his brothers and sister Carl, Bernie, Pete, and Dorothy.
Survivors include his children Dale Barber and fiancée Myra, Chris and wife Mariton Barber, Rita Barber, and Brian Barber all of Omaha, Nebraska, Ronnie and wife Valerie Barber of San Antonio, Texas; numerous grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren; his children’s mother Marion M. Barber of Omaha, Nebraska; his brother Jonnie and wife Gloria Barber of South Carolina; his sisters Maxine and Geraldine both of South Carolina; his brother-in-law Val Zinke of the Dominican Republic; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family will meet with friends Monday morning at 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Monday, February 19, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa. The casket bearers will be Chris Barber, Dale Barber, Brian Barber, and Ronnie Barber.
