Lorraine Arp, 91, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.
Lorraine Adeline Arp was born September 3, 1923, in Washington, Nebraska, the daughter of Charles and Katie (Arp) Peters. She went to elementary and junior high school in Washington and then attended Bennington High School in Bennington, Nebraska. She worked in Bennington as a hired person on a farm.
On November 8, 1942, she married Alvin Henry Arp at her parents' home in Bennington, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union. Lorraine and Alvin lived in Omaha, NE while he worked at the Martin Bomber plant in Bellevue. Alvin went into the service and upon his discharge in 1946 the couple lived in Irvington, NE for a short time until they moved to a farm north of Bennington, NE. In 1962, they moved to the farm three miles east of Griswold and remained there until 2005 when they moved to Atlantic.
While living in Bennington she cleaned houses. They moved to Waterloo, NE and she worked at Rob Seed Company. Later they moved to Griswold where she worked in cafes (John's and Mom's), Chuck Wagon, Griswold schools in the kitchen, and the mini mart in Griswold.
Lorraine was a member of the Neighborhood Club in Washington, she was the secretary for the TOPS organization in Griswold and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington, NE, Faith Lutheran in Griswold, IA and St. Paul's Lutheran in Atlantic, IA.
Gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking and baking were among her favorite activities. She sewed dresses for her daughters for school, doll clothes for her granddaughters, and she made wedding, graduation and birthday cakes. She taught a class at the Griswold High School in cake decorating and crocheting. She also kept a very well description of her life in her diary.
Preceding Lorraine in death were her parents; her husband, Alvin Arp; and a grandson, Scott Arp.
Surviving Lorraine are her children, Larry (Karen) Arp of Bennington, NE, Cheryl Meyer (partner, Mitch Saure) of Omaha, NE, Alan (Debbie) Arp of Griswold, IA and Lori (Dick) Cook of Atlantic, IA; her grandchildren, Lance Arp and Kara Sorensen both of Bennington, NE, Dustin Meyer and Jess Meyer (partner, Jennifer Andrews) all of Omaha, NE, Jennifer (Matt) Weber of Cedar Rapids, IA, Tabitha (Nick) Miller of Granger, IA, Paige Arp of Griswold, IA, Michaela Cook (partner, J.R. Mayberry) of Omaha, NE and Matthew Cook (partner, Tori Dolch) of Atlantic, IA; great-grandchildren, Kelsey George and Shelby Arp of Gretna, NE and Gage and Darian Sorensen of Bennington, NE; and great-great-grandchildren, Emery and Amelia George of Gretna, NE and Olivia Ann and Amelia Marie Weber of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Visitation with family will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 23, 2015, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m., all at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery, Atlantic, Iowa.
