Lowene Nadine Nelson, the daughter of Cliff and Emma (Rattenborg) Hansen, was born July 29, 1934, at her parents’ home in rural Audubon County, Iowa and died July 5, 2020, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 11 months, and 6 days.
Lowene was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. She attended rural schools in Audubon County then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1952.
On May 17, 1953, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Gene Nelson at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. They were blessed with four children: Bruce, Roger, Colleen, and Kurt. Lowene was employed at IPS for a short time then helped Lloyd operate the farm. They first farmed east of Audubon, then farmed near Defiance, Iowa, and later near Harlan, Iowa. In 1962, they purchased a farm west of Hamlin, Iowa, where they raised all types of livestock and grew row crops. They operated the farm until they retired in 2005. Lloyd moved to the Exira Care Center in 2009, and Lowene lived on the farm until October of 2010, when she moved into Audubon. Lloyd died on May 4, 2011.
Lowene was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to several card clubs. Lowene enjoyed hardanger, visiting with her many friends and family, and raising flowers, especially roses. She was a good cook and was famous for her sour cream chocolate cake. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and being involved in the many activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband Lloyd, were her son, Bruce Nelson; her parents, Cliff and Emma Hansen; her brother, Dalton and wife Kathryn Hansen; Lloyd’s parents, Peter H. and Johanna Nelson; and her brother-in-law, Larry Wunder.
Survivors include her children: Roger A. Nelson of Exira, Iowa; Colleen and husband Jerry Riesgaard of Exira; and Kurt and wife Toni Nelson of Audubon; her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Nelson of Kimballton, Iowa; her grandchildren: Justin Nelson and special friend Julie Soll of Kimballton, Iowa; Chris and wife Lindy Nelson of Elk Horn, Iowa; Shandy and husband Chris Schultes and Ben and wife Jenn Nelson, all of Audubon; Dr. Tim and wife Dr. Taryn Nelson of Creston, Iowa; Karla and husband Jim Casterton of Augusta, Georgia; Brenda and husband Alex Langpaul of West Des Moines, Iowa; Dr. Whitney Nelson of Wichita, Kansas; Olivia and husband Tanner Regenwether of Clinton, Iowa; Cliff Nelson of Audubon; Jorgen Jensen and fiancée Sarah Heinrich, both of Denver, Colorado; and Gretta Jensen of Des Moines, Iowa; her great-grandchildren: Jayce Nelson and fiancée Ruben Bedenbaugh; Jalen Nelson and fiancée Emily Copic; Jacob and Ariea Soll; Kealey, Creighton, and Easton Nelson; Kaitlin, Skyler, Elly, and Brody Schultes; Emery and Axton Nelson; Beckett Nelson; Kate and Joe Langpaul; Jaxon and Emma Regenwether; her great-great grandchildren, Carter Nelson and Addie and Avery Nelson; her brother, Roland and wife Peggy Hansen of Elk Horn, Iowa; her sisters, Betsy and husband Tom Nelsen of Audubon, and Mardelle and husband Duane Mortensen of Ankeny, Iowa; her sisters-in-law, Janet Wunder of Harlan, Iowa, and Shirley Hansen of Audubon; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
The family will meet with friends Wednesday afternoon, July 8, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Dan Beattie Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. July 8, 2020, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The casket bearers will be Justin Nelson, Chris Nelson, Chris Schultes, Ben Nelson, Dr. Tim Nelson, Jim Casterton, Alex Langpaul, Tanner Regenwether, and Cliff Nelson.
