Loyd Wayne Lewis

Loyd Wayne Lewis, the son of Ralph and Alma Fooken Lewis, was born July 31, 1925, in Cumberland, Iowa and died April 14, 2009, at Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 83 years, 8 months, and 14 days.
Loyd was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith. He attended Cumberland Schools, graduating with the Cumberland High School Class of 1942. Loyd was selected for all state six man football as a running back. He was drafted into the U. S. Navy on October 25, 1943. During his tour of duty he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on April 15 , 1946.
He was united in marriage to Margaret Coughlin on February 15, 1947 at St. Timothys Church in Reno, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Tom, Kathy, Nancy, and Ned. They lived in Audubon all of their married life. Margaret died December 18, 1990.
Loyd worked with livestock as an A.I. Specialist for 18 years. From 1964 until 1968 he was employed by Anchor Serum Company. He purchased the L. & M. Shoe Store in Audubon which he operated with his wife Margaret for 21 years.
He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Audubon Chamber of Commerce, County Conservation Commission, Board of Directors of Audubon County Club, Izaak Walton League, Dale Christensen Post No. 4119, Audubon, V.F.W. and a fifty year member of the Audubon Post No. 120, American Legion. He was sexton of the St. Patricks Catholic Cemetery for several years. Loyd was instrumental in purchasing and developing the land that is now known as Littlefield Park. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.
Preceding him in death in addition to his wife were his son-in-law John Poulsen, his great-grandson Jacob Poulsen; his parents and an infant sister.
Survivors include his children: Tom and Sue Lewis of Estherville, IA; Kathy and Keith Kerkmann of Massena, IA; Nancy Poulsen of Bunceton, MO; Ned and Lori Lewis of Urbandale, IA; his grandchildren: Megan Lewis, Brett Lewis, Aaron Lewis, all of Estherville; Kylie and Kevin Freund of Lewis, IA; Amanda and Andrew Knuth of Atlantic, IA; Casey and Megan Kerkmann of Beatrice, NE; Clinton and Tammy Poulsen; Ashley Poulsen, all of Booneville, MO; Cortney Poulsen of Kansas City, MO; Jordan Poulsen of Bunceton; Eric and Megan Lewis of Des Moines, IA; Adam Lewis of Denver, CO; 10 great-grandchildren: his brother Don and Harriett Lewis of Des Moines; his sisters-in-law: Helen Morrison of Omaha; Virginia Coughlin of Cumberland, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in St. Patricks Catholic Cemetery in Audubon.

Visitation:
A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 Thursday evening with family visitation to follow at 7:00 at Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.

Service:
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Wayne Gubbels on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon, IA.
